I fell in love again last night . . .
. . . with this machine!
Over the past couple of years, my curiosity has been piqued by impeller-type washers. Upon a trip to Mexico in 2007 and trips to Guatemala in 2009 and early 2010, I saw many of these types of machines for sale in the local appliance stores. In fact, these machines seemed to outnumber traditional top loaders and front-loaders 2-to-1. I did actually have a chance to use one in Mexico (a Daewoo) and was unimpressed with the performance. It had a very slow spin speed, which left the clothes sopping wet, and it didn't seem to do all that well at stain removal.
After watching many YouTube videos for Japanese washers and detergents, I suspected there must be something to this method of washing. After all, the Japanese are known for efficiency and innovation, so their clothes must certainly be clean. It still seemed, however, that the relatively slow turnover of these machines, and the fact that many of them lacked a heater would lead to poor cleaning performance.
When the LG Wave came out, I read a ton of reviews and saw a couple of clips online demonstrating the washing performance - and this machine seemed legit. I even went to Home Depot a couple of weeks ago to look at them, and the basic one without the heater was $848.00. The one I really wanted (the Graphite-colored one with the internal heater) was $1,099.00, which was way too much for me to pay for a second washing machine that I really didn't need. After all, I already had my LG steam washer and dryer, along with a F&P TL washer right next to it to fulfill my top-load needs.
To make a long story short, my fridge went out this week and I started doing some appliance shopping and realized that all of the major retailers are having some KILLER deals this month on appliances. As I walked past these washers again at Home Depot, the one I really wanted was marked down to $749.00! That was a much better deal, and so I decided to buy one from Best Buy, as they actually had one in stock and I could pick it up the same day.
After installing this bad boy last night, I had to do a couple of loads just to play with it. I was QUITE impressed! The wash action is AMAZING! Since this is supposed to be an Energy Star rated appliance, the default water level settings are pretty low, but even then they are quite adequate to wash well. What's even better is that they have a "Water Plus" option that actually completely submerges the clothes in water, which according to the manual provides for "superior results". There is EXCELLENT turnover of the clothes, and the agitation is quite good. It’s almost as if the clothes are being picked up and then SWOOSHED through the water, pulling the dirt, grime and stains out of the clothing. It seems to be a much more efficient wash action than the agitator-type method, and the higher water levels provide more – well – WATER to wash the clothes.
This machine really does bring the best of both worlds – the higher water levels and the loading/unloading convenience of a top-loader, and the energy efficiency and the larger load capacity of the front-loader. Add in the convenience of dispensers to load all of your laundry additives at the beginning of the wash and the extra cleaning and sanitizing abilities with the on-board heater, and you’ve got one heck of a machine! It even allows you to select up to 2 EXTRA rinses, for superior rinsing results – even with the “Water Plus” option selected. It also has a soak option and a bleach dispenser! Add to it the high spin speeds for faster drying times and I thought I was in paradise!
Now don’t get me wrong, I am still a HUGE fan of front-loaders, and vintage top-loaders for that matter, but I really do believe that this machine cleans VERY WELL, and provides some pretty tough competition for modern FL machines (and blows the recent offerings of traditional TL machines out of the water)! I'm not ready to make it my only machine, but then after having two machines setup side-by-side for the past 5 years, I'm not sure I could make any ONE machine my only machine!
