So-called "antique" DD Whirlpools
Orbital Maytags are still common these days, and it's the same with direct drive Whirlpools and Kenmores (which are still in print). But, there will come a day when they end up like the Frigidaire 1-18's; rare to find and very few in good working condition due to the scarcity of parts. Much of this is due, I'm sure, to the ever increasing value of scrap metal and other commodities, to be made into new Toyotas and electric hybrid cars and HE appliances that meet new energy mandates.
As you all probably know, I currently have a DD KitchenAid for a daily driver. Lately, I have shown very little, if any, respect for that machine. This is in spite of its good reliability after I replaced the mixer valve, courtesy of everythingold. Matt recently told me that my disrespect for that machine is going to come back and bite me 'till I start bleeding. After seeing what's available at the appliance shops and reading some consumer articles, this I'm sure will slowly sink in. It always does when you bash something around, and regret it later.
My research indicates that the shiny blue LG steam washers won't flush out sand and heavy dirt or rinse as well as a shredmore made in 1992. It just can't be done with a teaspoon of water! And people are complaining of skin irritation due to the HE detergent residue left on clothing, along with the strong mold buildup they can't seem to get rid of. The appliance salesman will deny this every time, of course. It's quite obvious that they are pushing these front loaders and HE top loaders like a drug dealer sells crack. I'm starting to get the idea that treating my KitchenAid a little better now could avoid a very unpleasant purchase later.
