We recently bought a new queen sized comforter and bed pad for our bed. It won't fit into our washer, so Karen asked me to take it to the local coin op to wash these items in one of the big front loaders so they could be washed before use.
Well, I get down there and select two of the Wascomat machines and load the items to be washed inside and just as I was ready to start the machines, I realized that I had forgotten my Persil at home! Not wanting to have to make a 15 mile round trip back to the house, I asked the laundry room attendant if they had any detergent for sale. They had these small boxes of Tide for .75 cents each. The box is about the size of one of those single serve breakfast cereal boxes. I also noted that the boxes did not say HE on them, so I only bought 1 box and divided it up between the two machines. I put in 1/4 of a box in the soak cycle bin and another 1/4 of a box in the wash bin on the top of the machine.
Well, the machine starts up. And it starts sudsing, and then suds some more. Soon I couldn't even see thru the window in the washer as suds completely covered it. Finally one of the local mamacitas comes by and tells me "You use too much soap!". I thought that suds were going to start coming thru the door! But for some reason they didn't. Then one of the machines, the one with the comforter goes into suds lock. So I am sitting there resigning myself to the fact that I am going to have to run the bed clothing thru another wash cycle without soap just to get rid of it all. I was also embarrassed as other people were watching the action in my machines. I kept thinking, I know Tide is a high sudsing detergent, but I thought I calculated a small enough amount! You'd think this wouldn't happen to someone from aw.org! How am I going to live this down?
Well, lo and behold, by the time the machine got thru the final rinse there was no more soap on the window! In fact what little water that was in the machine appeared to be clear! What luck! I was totally amazed at this.

A brand new comforter is not dirty. Any amount of American detergent will oversuds.

The little bit of detergent you did use was easily diluted in the 3 rinses provided.

What size Wascos did you use? How much to start the washer?

.75 is the going price for the coin vend size of detergents these days. I myself only charge .50 because 1) I think .75 is a ripoff for that amount of detergent and 2) I make money on people using the machines, not from buying little soap boxes.

its not your fault, Allen. its P&Gs fault. release the shame.

just yesterday i used about three tablespoons of Cheer liquid in a double-load Dexter and had about three inches of suds in the final rinse.

you get credit for dividing the single box between two machines. in my experience, the vend-size box of Tide you mention is even enough for two small-tub Maytag washer loads as well.

Peter:

They were the Wascomat Juniors and they charged $3.50 per load. I tried to fit both items in a Wascomat Senior, but they wouldn't fit. So I used two smaller machines. Those Wascomat Juniors are quite large. I have seen some of the local women in there stuff ALL the laundry for one week in those at one time!

In the part of town I live in, there just aren't that many coin ops. When I was younger and lived up north they were all over the place.

The one that was closest to our last house was a real dump.
This one appears to be Chinese owned and operated. It's bright and clean and the air conditioning in the place does a good job of keeping the place comfortable. I guess we are paying for this convenience through higher washing fees.

But any large items we put in these machines always come out nice and clean. If it weren't for the hassle of machine environmental requirements, I'd love to have one for the house!
