Black Crows
First of all, I didn't notice that licorice was off the shelves. Never cared for it though.
My mother LOVED licorice, especially "Black Crows".
One time she bought a box of Black Crows and the candy was covered with white powder.
Not knowing what it was, she wrote the manufacturer. They sent her a letter back (those were the days) that explained that it was (IIRC) cornstarch that should have been washed off before boxing.
About a week later a large box appeared at the door. Mom opened it up and it was filled with boxes and boxes of Black Crows, courtesy of the manufacturer. She was in heaven to say the least.
A related / unrelated story.
Years ago, Mom got a job at Woolworths at the candy counter.
She asked her new boss about sampling the candy. Boss's reply was "Sample anything you want. Eat candy to your heart's content!" And so she did.
After about a week she could barely look at the candy. Apparently the boss's trick was quite effective in stopping over-sampling of candy.
