Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

"Just genuinely curious why the Frigidaire Unimatic is so sought after?"

Several reasons:

Unique vertical pulsating agitator/transmission only GM Frigidaire designed.

Out of the 5 transmission designs Frigidaire produced (Unimatic, Pulsamatic, Multimatic, Rollermatic, 1/18) it was the most durable and reliable one out of the mix.

The only design that spun 1140 RPM's during the spin cycle (one of 2 top load washers that ever spun that fast with the exception of the very early GE's).

They are very rare as the last one rolled off of the assembly line 66 years ago, badly tangled items bad if not carefully loaded, were tossed due to the very small size of the tub 10+ years later, parts availability, and finding a repairmen capable of properly fixing them.

I talked to a repairmen in his 60's 20 years ago who used to fix them and he said parts were already getting tricky to find by the 1980's for the Unimatic and Pulsamatic washers.

The Rollermatic mechanism was put into the 1-18 unaltered in 1970. Technically, there’s 5 mechanisms Frigidaire used, technically 4. The whole reason Frigidaire went to the 1-18 design is solid tub machines were about done around this time along with the larger capacity machines that began to gain traction around this time.

Didn’t you have that one 1963 Frigidaire Multimatic years ag

Yep, picked it up in San Mateo on Oct 5, 2007.

Wow, time flies by.

"Wow must be hard giving up your collection"

True. OTOH many of us aren't getting any younger and sooner or later things will have to go.

Collectors of all sorts from fine art to automobiles and so forth often make a decision to sell off bits or everything. This more so if part of scheme of "getting one's affairs in order" so to speak.

Hi Kevin really sorry to hear you can’t take your fantastic collection with you. Not sure if you remember me and my partner Spencer, we visited you a good few years ago when you kindly invited us to see your collection. We were vacationing in Palm Springs from Sydney Australia at the time. I took loads of pictures. I was sooo jealous of your amassing collection. Good luck with the move and for the future. Simon
Just checked photos and it was Feb 2012. Longer than I thought. [this post was last edited: 10/11/2024-19:43]
