Having read some laundry guides online and buying some difficult to judge items..i'm opening this one up..

I found an electrolux laundry guide online..i found a miele one a while ago but forgot to save it lol...

Now how fussy is your sorting? Do you go to the extreme? Or is it simply a case of "If its not white it goes in?

One item that throws me are stripy tops. Eg. Red/white Black and white tops..If i go by the electrolux guide they say.

"Sort the load into piles by the lightest colour in the garment" This confused me somewhat.

Example: My son has a dark blue top with a light blue patch...for me i put that in my dark load, because the majority of the shirt is dark navy...

Black and white tops on the other hand...i don't know where i stand. Sometimes i put them in with lights...sometimes darks..

My two sons have loads of mixed coloured tops..i find myself moving them from pile to pile lol.

The way i normally sort the load is by the major colour of the garment. I.e my Print underwear with red, yellow black prints usually go in whites as the base colour is white...

Your thoughts guys? Pics?! Lets see that laundry :D:D

With a front loader, you can get away with murder and still survive the arrest.

If you load accordingly pilling is reduced.
Jeans by themselves (like sand paper)
Towels by themselves (lint giver)
Poly/cotton can be mixed as long as cool water is used with normal to short cycles.

Red fabrics can be washed with dark colors so it will not show color transfer unless it has white in it so it should be washed by itself.

This is just a start.

stripes

Although there are some detergent for mixed colour garments (I bet they are plain detergent for darks/coloureds, anti colour-transfer "thing" and no oxy, no optical brighteners)

in such a case I put a couple of these colour-catch sheets in the drum

If you're like a lot of people who aren't that concerned about how clean your clothes are not only the visible dirt but also the body mites we all shed onto our clothes being thoroughly removed, you can wash all your clothes together and they'll smell real good but be full of dead body mites and some germs.

If you want to realy get your clothes clean, you seperate whites from colors and wash the whites in hot water with a warm rinse using chlorine bleach (no more tan 1/4 cup)and, after a few minutes of agitation, stop the washer and let them soak for 30 to 45 minutes then restart and finish the cycle.

Dark clothes as well as pastels can be washed and rinsed in warm water and,as long as they're colorfast(won't fade or run),they can be washed together. I sort the pastels from the dark clothes and wash both in warm water but rinse the pastels in cold because most of the time the pastels are synthetic and won't wrinkle as much if they're rinsed in cold water.Any items made of rayon, nylon,or wool should always be washed and rinsed in either tepid or cold water.NEVER WASH CURTAINS MADE OF FIBERGLASS IN YOUR WASHER!!!! Back in the early 70's,our grandmother put the living room curtains in our Lady kenmore combo then washed our underware in the next load.We were in agony after putting on the shorts because the fibers from the curtains left in the combo got into the cotton fabric of our shorts and gave us severe rashes!!Our doctor laughed because our dad thought we'd been "naughty" and got crabs! Not only was it painfull but embarrasing too.I'll never have anything made of fiberglass. Not even insolation.Peace.

Ok you asked,

Have not bothered doing any washing over the past 2 weeks except for essential stuff and now face all this!!!

Will be getting stuck into it tonight with the aid of the Hoover Spin dryer to get as much water out as possible.

2 loads Whites, bedding wite towels and tea towels at 95 degrees with Ariel Bio powder and grass Lenor.

Following lots with Blue Bold powder and whichever softener takes my fancy out of Grass Lenor, Tesco Blue or Quanttro - a Reckitt Benckiser softener from Germany.
1 Load undies sox jeans etc on 40 deg cottons
1 load Dark towels microfibre dishcloths and such either on 70/60 degree cottons
1 Load Woolly/Scrylic jumpers for 30deg Silk wash.
1 Load Cotton Work Combats 50deg Synthetics Slow spin though. Dont want to be ironing those!
1 Load Blue/Red Polo Tshirts 40degree Acrylic wash also slow spin.
1 Load Work Jackets 40deg Acrylics - either spin is fine.
1 Dressing gown, 60/70 degree cottons with the bath mat included too.

Have the hosue to clean too so I can enjoy my long weekend off work.
I can feel a very lazy day tommorrow now!

Thanks for your comments guys.

I used to be so so picky with sorting and end up with a gazilion piles bit OCD prehaps lol..though i'm not so bad now. Darks i wash red, green, black, darker shades of blue etc.

Alot of baby clothes tend to be these mixed colours i speak of...most of them are white with coloured print on which i tend to make as a whites wash that i was with pale blue grows too.

Towels i now have Dark and light towel loads because the new darker towels bleed to hell.

3 basic types here

We try and sort by 3 basic types at our house, with a possible "sub category" thrown in depending on what's going on.

1 Whites, hottest water possible and chlorine bleach (Anything white that can stand the heat/vigorous tumbling goes in.)

2 Darks, jeans*, dark polo shirts, etc. (Warm water, medium tumbling)
* Subcategory--We have "dress" jeans and we have work jeans. Those usually get separated out based on level of dirt involved. (Working around the 10 acres, one tends to get a bit dirty rather than wearing a pair of jeans to the office.) These get vigorous tumbling for long periods of time in warm water.)

3 Permanent Pressed--most of my office clothes go in this pile. (Gentle tumbling, warm wash, cold rinse.)

Welllll.....

....I usually do the following loads over a week

1 x load of whites. This also includes all light coloured business shirts (Sky blue/lavender)
1 x load of lights. This also includes anything 'old' that is striped and faded/not going to bleed
1 x load of darks. This also includes anything that is likely to bleed (including darker greens/reds)
1 x towels
1 x sheets
2 x dog bedding

...every other week I also do a load of 'mid' colours (lighter browns/browns/natural colours) that don't seem to fit into either 'lights' or 'darks'....

Most loads are done at 40c with quick wash engaged. The exceptions are sheets and towels which are done at 60c with quick wash........

Good detergent
No conditioner
No added bleach

1 x dress shirts - 50degC, Shirts program or Minimum iron
1 x Darks (Gym clothes, undies, socks, T shirts shorts) - Cottons 40degC extra rinse, intensive
1 x whites (Undies T Shirts socks) - Cottons 50degC, extra rinse
1 x Towels - Cottons, 50degC - Extra rinse
2 x Sheets - Cottons, 50degC - Extra Rinse

Only use a scoop of Drive

Shirts program is 1 hr
Cottons is approx 1:20 (With three rinses)
Cottons Intensive is 2 hours (With three rinses)

rohnic has our strategy about down, with the following minor changes

1 x jeans (since they seem to beat up anything washed with them)
2 x sheets (king size set and then the two fulls upstairs, together)
1 x kitchen / cleaning / dog towels on extra hot with extra detergent.

I only wash the dog bedding when we give Cosmo a bath. Otherwise, since he's primarily an indoor dog, it is as clean as he is.

I sort as

Whites--undershirts, below-the-waist stuff, white sox, and kitchen towels (hot)

dress slacks--wrinke free cotton one load dark colors the other load kakhi colors (warm)

towels--subgrouped into very dark, medium dark, pastels, and off-white--each load hot

sheets all by themselves--1 set at a time, medium temp

shirt--sorted into darker vs. lighter and sorted whether it's poly/cotton permpress or polo/golf-type shirts and similar t-shirts--allwarm

jeans get washed all by themselves always and turned inside out. (warm) I don't believe in mixing jeans and towels

I think that takes care of my major groups.

Hot is 140-150 degrees, medium is 120 degrees, warm is 95-104 degrees F. gemp.

Ronhic: That was exactly the sort of description i was looking for! Very similar to the way i sort my own laundry too!

I made myself sound like i dont have a clue lol i really do it is really just items that have white and colour together...which does it go in with?! ahh!

colour 'n' white garments

Darren wash them separately or use those sheets in my previous link. Just put 3 of them if there's a garment that really "bleeds" .... never go beyond 40°C and never load more than half drum.
Minimum iron or the 30 minute cycle also are better than regular cotton, cause the extended wash bath is not the best thing for non-fast colours.
