Robert, I'm a little frustrated. Just wrote a semi long response to a post but stopped and came back 5 minutes later. Finished the post and hit preview. Then bang - log in screen pops up. Log in and NOTHING! My entire post was gone. Very frustrating. Not sure I'll bother recreating the post, too much trouble. I know the system logs us out once a week but it would be great if there was a buffer so this does not happen. I know that might be too much work but just be aware.

just one of those things that does happen from time to time....you dont even have to walk away...at the point you want to preview, it will knock you out...
and yes, nothing is saved....so you have a choice, re-type it, or forget about it

You know Matt I’ve had this happen more than once too. Once I was lucky to recover my text by hitting the back button on my browser screen, and bam there it was. But then I tried it another time and no dice. But I still would try the back button again, it doesn’t hurt to try.

Yep, tried the back button, no love. I was laying on the floor typing on my laptop and it was too much of a pain to retype everything, felt a bit frustrated. Tried to get into Vacuumland but my log in was not working, I had not been there for quite some time. Generally avoid that side, don't know if it's gotten friendlier over there. Did repost from my main computer later on my Kirby issue that was resolved.

For longer posts I always use Word until I get it the way I want and then I paste it in here for posting. I realize it's an extra step but it does save the frustration of losing postings. If you don't have Word you can use Notepad or TextEdit (comes on Windows and MAC computers)just as easily. I use Word because it helps to keep my posts spell checked to.</span>

There are several reasons why this can happen. Having to log in periodically is one reason, a bad internet connection suddenly can do the same thing. Using the back button sometimes helps but not always. Some years ago I learned myself to select the whole text and hit Ctrl C so the text is copied. When something goes wrong you only have to hit Ctrl V to paste the copied text in again. Saves the hassle of rethinking and retyping.
Thanks Matt, yes it's happened to me as well. I could change the log-out for longer than seven days, but that really wouldn't cure the problem. Maybe I can come up with a graphic or color change on the log-out button if it is getting close to log-out time. I'll think about the best way of handling that.
I never have a problem. I shut down my computer every night and simply log in the next day as I clean all cookies out daily.

As a rule I never log out. I know once a week the system will log me out, that's fine. 99.9% of the time it's not an issue. I think it s a cookie on the individual system, it seems my laptops log out at differing times than my main desktop. In his case I was just a bit frustrated with a few things and that topped things off.

Robert, is the log-in period a literal 7 days? (ie: 168 hours after logging in, the user will be automatically logged out?)
If so, I wonder if things could be improved by shifting the time duration by 12 hours. For example, changing the login to 6.5 or 7.5 days would mean that, statistically, the user is much more likely to not be kicked during the hours when they frequent the forum.
Like if I usually read the forum in the afternoon, I'd do my log-in during the afternoon - but then would be kicked in a week in the early morning hours when I'm less likely to be actively typing a reply.

No, I very much like the 7 day period. Has worked pretty well for years, no need to change that.

The automatic log-out probably doesn't trigger until the user opens his browser after the point at which the cookie has expired. Said cookie tells the server to enact the log-out at that instant.
