Well, it's a cold November morning, and I like nothing better than starting the laundry early and then smelling the clean clothing against the cold outside air.

So many laundry products here in the UK change scent so frequently, sometimes it's nice and comforting to revert to the old classics.

I can name only one UK detergent which hasn't changed scents once since it came out about 10 years ago, though the scent has been running for longer than that with a different formulation (clue!), 1 UK fabric softener which hasn't changed scents for at least 13 years (and I suspect longer) and another UK laundry product which has had the same scent since the eighties.

Anyone know what they are?

What's the situation in other countries?

Nick

The only UK/Ireland products that haven't changed scent that I can think of are Comfort Blue (Unilever) and Daz (P&G).

Ariel and Persil have changed drastically in the last few years.

Have you noticed the new Comfort naturals appearing on the shelves?

1. Daz tablets?

Daz tablets have the 80s powder scent even though the modern powder scent has changed.

2.Softener is definitely Comfort Blue,

3.and the other product is Persil Non Biological Powder which smells the same pretty much since it started.

I too have a big line of crisp whites on the line on this dull but chilly morn.
Washed in Persil Non Bio with a dash of Comfort blue the scent blowing around the garden is great.

Hi Mrx

Wow, that's great you still have the original Comfort fragrance over there. Comfort Blue UK changed in about '99, then last summer the concentrated variety changed again to something far more potent. So now in the UK you can buy dilute Comfort Blue ('99 scent) or concentrate with the different scent simultaneously.

You're spot on with Daz,same in the UK, more specifically Daz tablets. Daz powder took on a new scent at the same time as Ariel went `Green Toilet Duck', but the tablets still have the great old scent.

I have noticed Comfort naturals, but I'm not a huge fan of any Comfort as, for me, it leave soapy splodges on black items made from certain fibres.

Must get some daz tablets as I do love that scent! I love the '99 scent of comfort blue too so may have to get some of that! I wonder if the original daz scent would work well with the comfort?

I too have a load of washing in as I type, load of mixed darks on a 40c Cottons with reduced creases and mini load selected in the Hotpoint! If the rain and hail holds off, I shall be tempted to line dry! The scent of Lenor floating around the garden! Yum!

Anyone fancy a nice bacon sarnie? lol :-D

Dan,

Just as you posted that message the sun came out for me, nice breeze blowing.

Shame my gardens such a mess right now with the trees dropping their leaves. Wish I had time to go and sort it all out and get it ready for the winter.
Funnily though I have time to go take a pic, suppose I really do have time afterall lol, maybe a case of wanting to?

And I really must sort out the dodgy stretching washing line, I fancy one of those old fashioned white rope ones instead of the sagging plastic coated thing.

Daz Tablets

have changed scent when they first brought out the New Daz powder in the new boxes with the modern DAZ logo (2005) i'm pretty sure the tablets scent changed as well.

then when the powder changed and they brought out the new fresher whites formula, the tablets remained the same as the new Daz powder scent from 2005

I'm pretty sure you can get the old Daz still as i went into instore the other day and they had big boxes of Daz with the old Daz logo from pre 2004

I hope its the old formulation, i remember daz used to have a blue tinge and it foamed up really well

Longest Running Detergent Scents

Hi Nick,
I would say its Fairy Snow or original Persil Handwash, I could have included original Ariel Handwash Powder but unfortunately P&G changed its scent about 3 years ago.
Fabric softener it has to Lenor Spring Awakening, thankfully P&G have left it alone for many years.
Unilever has drastically changed Blue Comfort, it smells vile to me now so much so the last bottle I bought went into the bin almost full only three wash loads used. It also made me itch like crazy and gave me a headache. I wish P&G and Unilever would go back in time 25 or so years as they both had wonderful scents in their products.

David

Well the sun did not come out for long here, and then the sleet started! Dont you just love northern weather? LOL.
Into the dryer they went unfortunatley.
Got whites done too. Cloths, tea towels and such boilwashed in Asda 2in1 Summer Blossom powder!

Called into Aldi earlier too, picked up a bottle of their ColourCare liquid, smells divine! Also picked up a bottle of their dilute conditioner for 85p that also smells lovely. Got a small load of coloureds in trying them both out. Shall let you know the results once the machine has finally slowed from 1600rpm!

Dan
P.S Lovely white whites there Rob!

Hey folks..

Right, well the answer for the powder scent is indeed Daz tabs.

Rob, daarnn saarff, the Persil non bio powder has changed (GUTTED) and the scent is now the same as the tabs. To me it's a most weird, mildew type scent. Oh, and Persil non bio has had two scent changes that I know of - the first time it changed was 1996. Before this time it had a far `edgier' smell that the softer type of smell it's hard since.

Zanussi_Lover, is not the case in my experience. Original Daz tabs have not had a scent change.

David, unfortunately both Persil non bio and Fairy Snow have had scent changes. Fairy Snow was really quite a lovely distinctive smell, in the days when it had the Hotpoint Twin Tub on the back! Now it's in the blue packaging, it's similar to Fairy Auto powder in scent. Persil Handwash I'm less sure about, but I'd put money on the scent having changed from when I was a little boy. My Nana boiling away with it. However I'd say that now it smells better.

David, the conditioner I had in mind was the Summer Breeze Lenor. I wasn't confident enough to say if Spring Awakening had changed, but you have confirmed it for me. So we'll lump those two together as ones which haven't changed.

And the product which hasn't changed since the eighties, anyone????

Hi Rob

Well, Daz liquid now unfortunately smells like the generic PG Ariel liquid type smell, so that wonderful scent is also gone.

My answer to the same scent since the eighties, is original Bounce (Summer Fresh) Dryer Sheets!

Others may have different, equally valid answers....

Enjoy your Saturday night everyone, I feel a take away Curry coming on. Lovely.....

Wots Changed!!!

Hi Nick, glad you are enjoying your new machines and testing all the new & old detergents!!!

I will say ARIEL HANDWASH Liquid & PERSIL HANDWASH Powder!!!

Interesting about the own brand stuff, was talking to a marketer from a London agency, and I mentioned about the perception that own brand wouldnt be as good as Main Brand...he said the specs on anything OWNBRAND have changed dramatically since yesteryear and the starting point is always to attain 110% effectiveness (as a baseline)of the Main Brand..interesting. So whatever we feel works, well thats right for us!!!

Happy washing!!

"...to attain 110% effectiveness (as a baseline)of the

This seems to be true of Tesco's own-brand dishwasher products. They usually have a claim on the packet along the lines of: "Cleans as well as the best selling...".

Hi Mike

That's very interesting, about the own brand stuff being better than it used to be. I really think it's true!

BTW I'm pretty sure that whereas `Ariel Rapide', as was, had it's own unique scent, Ariel handwash now has a similar scent to standard Ariel Liqiod / Daz etc. But I may have been sniffing a faulty batch in Wilkinsons. Or perhaps I've just been sniffing too long - they'll take me away soon....

I would have guessed the blue and yellow Lenors too. Although not original as can be, I always remember when all varieties of Persil liquid smelt close to the Persil Non BIo liquigel that can still be bought today. Can't really comment on the Daz tablets as I've only ever bought Daz in the past 3 years or so, but Fairy liquid (the washing machine one not the washing up) has got the same smell as the old powder used to have, and I'm sure Ariel liquid still smells more or less the same as it did in the Ariel Futur era.

the new tesco laundry products scent reminds me of something between old spice, stale cigerette smoke and tiger lily. It is absolutely disgusting!

I always thought bold always smelt sort of the same since I was young. It always had an underlying smell to it. Can't describe it but you can smell it on all the standard powders except the lavender one. I think its always been there.

Anyone agree? Or am i totally wrong??

Oh, been using yellow lenor is my all time fave washing scent! My mum started using it when i was really young. I still do!

David

Yes, David - totally agree with the undertones to Bold.

I feel it's currently most prominent on the green one.

Listen to us, the `Jilly Gouldens' of laundry detergents LOL

Haha yes! Obviously I have the green bold for that reason! The really big boxes went on offer at ASDA recently and bought a couple of boxes. There in the back of the car till the box we have is done, the car has never smelt better! No magic tree for me!

David

Vintage Bold 3

Hi David & Nick,
Yes indeed I have noticed a distinct undertone of Bold 3 in the current Bold 2in1 Apple Blossom & Lime Zest Powder and Tablets too. It is especially noticeable coming from my machines in particular my Miele W3985WPS as it nears 95°C. The other Bold variants don't at least to my nose have the vintage undertone. I have a great memory for scents and I have to say Bold 3 was one of my favorites.

You know it really annoys me when I think of all the wonderful detergent and softener scents we have lost over the years because P&G and Unilever can't leave things alone! One that really upset me was P&G changing Ariel Handwash Powder, thankfully one has a large stash of E3 size boxes still in shrink wrap from the Cash & Carry. I allow myself a nice boil wash a few times a year in my Hotpoint 1414 Twin Tub; the moment the Ariel hits the water the scent transports me back to my childhood and my Great Aunt using her Philips Top Twin. The Philips Top Twin had a shorter faster agitator stroke than the Servis Supertwin; I can still picture that black agitator thrashing away and the delicious Ariel fumes rising out of the tub.

David

I always thought that the standard blue Lenor fabric conditioner had not changed in years until recently. I bought a bottle of the new Infusions range - "Breath of Fresh Air" which smells like the old Spring Fresh Lenor of the 90's. There is definitely a subtle difference between the standard Spring Awakening (or whatever it's called these days) and the Infusions one that's out, albeit nothing major.

The "Barefoot In The Grass" Lenor Infusions derivative is my current personal favourite - having a scent identical to that of Alpine Fresh Lenor of yesteryear.

Ah really, Sajid. V interesting, thanks for posting. I wonder how many times they'll resurrect `Alpine Fresh'? I always thought that the `pink' Lenor Fabric Enhancer was Alpine Fresh too.

I saw all of those new Infusions scents in Wilkinsons, but for some reason just chuckled and walked on. Now I wish I'd sniffed.........and from what you've said I'll be buying if only to bring back some memories.

Oh yes the new blue Breath Of Fresh Air Lenor is my current fave too. I hate those other infusions ones (black diamond etc. that match the new Bold scents), but all 3 of the new ones are nice. The blue one in particular has an amazingly long lasting scent that isn't trying to smell like cheap perfume.

Nick....

Theres an orange Lenor Infusions one out as well which I believe is called "Burst of Sunshine" (Where do they get these names from, honestly!?) which on the initial "sniffing" I'm 99% certain is the old Tropical Fresh that was on the go 12-15 years ago.

I have to say these three I've been on about here are definitely more pleasing that the other Infusions stuff that match the Bold detergents.

Either way, two quid a bottle is two quid a bottle, so it needs to be good stuff at that price considering the current financial state we're in!

New Lenor Infusions Touch Effects

Hi Folks,
I am so happy oh so happy!
Yes indeed the 80's and 90's Lenor scents have indeed returned, my local Asda finally got them in and I had a good sniff! I bought 4 bottles each of the "Breath of Fresh Air" and the "Barefoot In The Grass" the "Burst of Sunshine" is not my type of scent. They are without doubt the scents of yesteryear and may favorite is "Breath of Fresh Air" it smells totally divine on my bed linens and blends beautifully with the Ariel Excel Gel scent.

I have to say the packaging is very attractive and classy looking.

Well done P&G now please leave those scents alone!!!

David

New Lenor Infusions Touch Effects

Hi Sajid,
Yes the "Burst of Sunshine" is indeed the same Tropical Fresh Lenor scent.
I personally never liked Lenor Tropical Fresh or Lenor Summer Breeze for that matter as they are too sweet and floral for my taste, I don't find them unpleasant but they would not be my first choice.

David

does anyone remember

Lenor Alpine Spirit, Carnival Passion, and Oriental blossom,

last time i used Oriental Blossom Lenor was in 1997 (i was 9 years old then) My mum always used to use it, i think it disappeared off the shelves in 2001, alongside Ariel Alpine, Lenor Alpine Spirit and Carnival Passion.

I remember using Daz liquid last year as I bought a big 5 litre bottle from the cash and carry when it was on offer. I used it in the top loader and it would fill the garage with an amazing vintage smell. It was lovely. Unfortunately Andrew was allergic to something in it and I didn't buy it again.

I remember Lenor Tropical Fresh. Very sweet smell. Summer breeze is a funny scent for me. I like it but I don't like it. Maybe I like it because it seems to have been around for so long so it gives me a nostalgic feeling.Sometimes it seems ok but sometimes it seems a bit to overpowering. I didn't realise that Lenor had brought out new scents or the "infusion" range. Will have to go and sniff to see if I remember the smells of yesteryear.
