My wife was on her way home on Tuesday this week and saw a handle sticking out of the garbage. So she dragged it into her car and brought it home. It is a 913 commercial upright from the 1960's (late). It was made in England and shipped here for sale. While it is very dirty...the machine is intact with a newer cord and a very funny looking toggleswitch sticking out of the handle. The agitator is shot and the cord is too. I think she will clean up very nicely. I do not think that this machine ever left North Canton as it has a namplate on the bottom with our local hospital which is long gone. I do not know who put the tape on the hood with the word "Jaws" printed on it. Funny though!!! It just goes to show you what can still be found if you keep your eyes peeled...and the price was just right too!

Here is the whole machine. I think that the bag will clean up and it is the original one too! Way to go Heather!

Tom is a lucky man!!!

To have such an understanding wife who will dig through the garbage to grab a vacuum for her husband! I myself got a great Royal classic 4000 by rescuing it the same way! Grab it and go!

Good save Tom!
A similar thing happened to me last Sunday. I was headed home out Fulton Rd past Whipple and spotted a handle sticking out of a pile at the curb. I stopped to check it out and it was a really beat up Eureka. Looked as if it had been run over. I left it there. Had it been a Hoover I would have at least taken it for parts.

Thanks for the comments...sorry about the weird looking toggle switch comment...what I meant was the original white tab switch was replaced with a more sturdy metal toggle switch. The hospital was Molly Stark Hospital...not sure if it is still there. This machine was found a few blocks from me near the Hoover Company. I have even been on my way to work and grabbed items out of the trash. Like Wisk'ybill said if it is a Hoover I would at least use it for parts. This one however is going to be saved. If she had taken a different way home, it would be in a landfill by now. It is sad to know that so many of these great machines have ended up there.

WOW!

I'd pee my pants if I found a 913 in the trash!

"One mans junk...." you know the rest.

Nice Find

Nice find there Tom, I'll bet it was tough for your wife to hoist into the Element. Those 913's are heavy. My wife has rescued several vacs that way too, but she may have had a rough time lifting that 913 into the Blazer. I would have never fished stuff out of the trash if it were not for my wife getting me started. She also got me into flea markets and yard sales. Had no interest in that stuff until I met her. Now you can't stop me. She says she's created a monster when it comes to old stuff, especially vacuums.

Looking forward to your visit later next week.

Joe
