A little scared to touch it yet, but Robert, you were right it isn't the pump it's the main drain trunk hose to the diverter/return pump. This will be an easy fix I think:
Here's the tub, which has issues, but it's unique being the very first perforated V-12 tub, and similar to the one on the first "V" model I ever saw, so I'm going to try to save it:
with any luck I'll be able to replace it with this one swiped off of a discarded machine 40 some odd years newer. Funny how this size tub was first rated as having a 12 lb. capacity, then 14, then 16, then GE just gave up and called it "standard capacity".
But the jewel in the crown is the dial: no, not illuminated as this machine is one step away from being a BOL (which is one reason I love it), but a color that, I believe, was used once, and only for this particular model. Welch would have shot these people. Course, I'd like to shoot Welch, but that's not in the spirit of this thread...

That is a cute GE. Good luck with the repairs. It is funny on the water level switch instead of "hi - med - lo," they use pounds. (Like you were supposed to keep a scale next to the washer.)

Bet you've thought of this: just snip off the inch of trunk with the leak, and slide'er right back under the clamp.
For a near BOL, GE sure knows how to put on a good show.

ooo this is VERY cool. The hole pattern looks more uniform than the random pattern that I've seen on later wash tubs - hopefully you can save it.

The motor-pump "linkage" thingie isn't looking too good.

The shippers were incredibly accommodating; because it was July 4th weekend and they had to bring it to me in a smaller truck, they were able to schedule delivery later, even though it came to the Wallingford depot in only a couple of days.
"The motor-pump "linkage" thingie isn't looking too good."
Yeah, the leather straps are looking worn, but they're incredibly durable.
All I really have to do is change three of the drain/suds return hoses and put in the new washbasket although I am trying to preserve the old one. I'm having a little difficulty finding the right adapters to put on the old main drain hose leg which is custom-fitted to this machine and has a flare at the pump end. Just needs some more leg work. Someone recommended that I go and get some bilge-pump hoses made out of lighter and more flexible plastic. I'll definitely post pics as I finish the job. This is the very first suds-saving washer I've ever seen, less owned, and I'm dying to give it a trial run even if it means storing the water in a plastic garbage can.
