We're remodeling our kitchen this summer, and are starting to look for appliances. My parents have mostly been looking at kitchenaid, but I'd like some input on which brands to avoid, and which brands typically have good reliability. We are already avoiding samsung and LG.

KitchenAid and Whirlpool. Once you decide on style and size, also look at the comparable Maytag version. All 3 have slightly different tweaks of features.
Whirlpool Dishwashers
I've owned nothing but whirlpool branded or manufactured by dishwashers. Never had a repair on any of them.
As for the refrigerators... I prefer GE. Never had to do anything to them. The whirlpools have problems with the drain lines freezing up. Pain in the neck. I've had to fix that problem twice in 2 years. If it happens again, I'm going to swap it out for a GE. I know others that have good luck with the side by side Whirlpools. Mine is a top-freezer.

My family has had good luck with WP and KA, but older units that may not reflect current offerings.
Granny had a 1984 WP with one repair (compressor start relay) through her death in 2013. It sold with the house, don't know how long the buyers kept it.
Parents' top-freezer KA is 26 years, no repairs other than ice maker.
My KA top-freezer (relegated to garage unit in 2005) is 24 years, no repairs (except the ice maker swapped to the parents).
2004 GE Arctica SxS came with my current house (in 2005) has had the motherboard and freezer evap fan replaced, water valve assembly, ice dispenser chute flapper & solenoid, and the water dispenser line went to leaking under the unit 3 years ago so is no longer usable (ice maker feed line is as-yet OK).
Not to jinx it but I'm creeping up on 20 years with my WP SxS and only had one minor issue, the lighting control board, a 20 minute and $40 fix. My bother has the exact same fridge only 4 months newer and had the same issue 3 months after me. Everything else is fine zero issues.
I have no issue suggesting WP brand appliances, they have been great for me. My KA Dw gets everything clean every time.

I have a 3 year old Frigidaire side by side that I hate. Everything is super cheap plastic. Most all of the plastic drawers and shelves have cracked or completely broken, and those aren’t covered under warranty. Now I’m having icemaker troubles. I have a 2003 Whirlpool in the garage that has been great. Just had to replace the compressor relay switch (super easy with a $16 part). I shoulda stuck with Whirlpool.

Your best bet may be an add on downdraft system. A number of options and power levels.

Does Downdraft work with gas cook tops? I ask as I would have thought the draft created would pull the flames?
I know its an odd thing to ask but I was just wondering!!!

Gas cooktops with a downdraft system are not available here, I think they are against code. Only induction cooktops are available with them.
Jenn Air is the only brand I know of that offers(ed) gas downdraft cooktops. Jenn Air was who created the concept. And you are correct, the air movement created from the vent sucking down the air did impact the flame, especially on very low flame settings.
Yes, i can see the downdraft affecting the flames. That is why I suggested the add on version. it extends up 8-12" when in use and would have less effect on the gas burners.
This is the fridge that we bought last year and it finally got delivered 3 weeks ago. It’s an LG and so far no issues with it and it runs silently. I know from what I read that LG was off the list but I will tell you that Whirlpool built fridges are not all that. Your mileage may vary.

I'm coming up on a year with a GE GNE25 series french door. This refrigerator AFAIK has the largest capacity for its 33" width, which was a major constraint because of my kitchen layout. It lacks a lot of the bells and whistles that only appear on fridges 36" or greater. It does have chilled filtered water inside the door. The icemaker makes cubes in under half an hour. It's whisper quiet and just works great.
My only regret is not getting the fridge in finger resistant slate, which is what the sides are covered in. The doors are SS, which was the only thing in stock. All other options would have taken months to arrive, as everything is backordered these days. I bought what was available.

In my second house that we sold last year had a side by side Kenmore and a GE top freezer fridge from 1998 that were both 22 years old. The Kenmore needed a new ice maker in its life, the GE never needed anything. When we bought this house, it came with a 2018 GE 28 cubic foot french door. This is my favorite GE of them all. My mother saw it when they visited last year and now wants one for their kitchen. I have no idea how long it will last but it will be repaired if anything happens.

GE Fridge
Hi ... As part of the new kitchen after the fire I got this GE fridge. The important thing was the second ice maker (option) in the freezer. Really happy with this fridge.
