Looking for Turquoise

Ok class, here's your assignment for today - 

 

I do not own a turquoise appliance, but wish to match GE's Turquoise Green color on a cabinet.

 

I have checked with Sherwin-Williams (my go-to for paints) and they do not have the formula for this color in their data base.  They also said they did not think that the automotive division would have it either.

 

So, I pose this question to all AW members who possess a GE appliance that is Turquoise Green.  If you have access to a paint manufacturer's fan deck, would you be willing to find the closest match to TG in that particular fan deck and let me know what you come up with?  Obviously, Sherwin-Williams' fan deck would be my first choice, but I can work with any manufacturer's fan deck.  And I realize this is somewhat subjective, based on lighting and personal opinion, but it's a start.  If someone can come up with a reasonably close match (could be Devoe, PPG, Glidden, Behr, etc.) I can secure a sample and check it out for myself.

 

Open to all suggestions/opinions.

Not sure if this would help, but a few years ago, I had a piece of leftover Wonder Kitchen scanned at a hardware store here in La Belle Province and they came up with a formula for a darn good match.  I kept the colour additions formula (it's safely tucked away somewhere in the 'dishwasher dungeon' in Ogden) - do you think this may be helpful?  If so, I'd be happy to scan it and send it to you.

Paul - yes, if you can find it I would appreciate the information.  Again, I'm not wanting to purchase appliance paint (enamel), but if I can get a base and proportions of pigments, I should be able to have it mixed in a wall/cabinet type of paint/enamel.

 

Ken - thanks for the link, too.  I need to contact DuPont and see if I can get the same information I described above.  A base and the required pigments and their units.

The closest I could find is Sherwin Williams "Cooled Blue" SW 6759. I used it to paint my kitchen cabinets to match Estelle.

Excellent!  That's just what I was looking for.  So, you used it - were you pleased with the results?

I must have brought home over 100+ swatches of turquoise paint from just about every paint manufacturer around, and none came close to the SW Cooled Blue. It isn't exact, but very close. I think it's just a teensy bit greener than the original GE but I think the type of lighting also dictates what it looks like.

I've attached a picture of Estelle and the painted cabinets. In hindsight, I would have gone with a gloss finish as I think that would make it virtually impossible to tell the difference. Hope that helps.

Looks good!  I think it's a good match, especially since there's no direct comparison to the stove (i.e., not the base cabinets).  I also think it will work for me since I don't actually have one of the turquoise appliances, so again, no direct comparison.

 

My kitchen cabinets are the reverse of yours - turquoise base, white wall.  However, the turquoise that I chose is just too dark; a beautiful color, but too dark.  I'm considering repainting them.

Jeannine, your cabinets turned out excellent.

Lawrence, keep in mind that the painted finishes on refrigerators, dishwashers and GE steel cabinets would vary slightly in color from the porcelain enamel used on range products, as light is reflected differently in finishes of different composition.

Though I haven't used SW paint lately, the reviews on their website indicate the top rated products for such use are ProMar 400 Zero VOC, Pro Industrial Acrylic Coating, Solo Acrylic I/E, and Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.

If they were steel, I would have them sprayed with either the PPG Ditzler or DuPont auto finish in the correct GE color.

Cabinets

All of my cabinets are wood.  Currently the wall cabinets are painted White (Gloss) in their Pro Classic (latex) product.  The base cabinets are painted SW "Surfer" (High Gloss) in their All-Surface Enamel (latex) product.  Both products worked great.  The Surfer is really a beautiful color, but I think it's just a little too dark/intense - really saturated with color.

 

The goal is to lighten them just a tad, probably with the "Cooled Blue" that Jeanine used, and probably with the same All-Surface Enamel product.

Tom and Lawrence, thanks for the compliments. The two top cabinets were original GE turquoise, and the bottom right was also originally turquoise but was repainted white inside and out (they were this way when purchased). The microwave cabinet is a wooden one from Lowe's that was repainted. When we replace the microwave with a vent hood, I'll change out that cabinet to a metal one.

The doors on the turquoise uppers were pretty scratched and rusted, and I could not save them, so decided to go with a repaint. I decided not to paint the bottom cabinets turquoise as I thought Estelle would blend in too much, and I wanted her to stand out, thus the white. The bottom left cabinet was originally a pink GE, but I painted the outside with a white enamel appliance spray paint, but I kept the original pink interior. It was in good shape, so I just sanded with a high grit sandpaper to give the surface just a little "tooth" and painted straight over that.

For the turquoise ones, I sanded them down and filled in some of the scratches with bondo spot putty, and then primed with Duplicolor grey auto primer that's also a filler. I then sponge rolled the turquoise paint since I could not use a sprayer at the time.

I have a shed full of metal cabinets that need repainting (all pink or scratched up turquoise), and now that the weather is finally starting to warm up, I can finally start painting again and slowly replace the ones we have.
