Looks like someone went down to the design archives at Frigidaire

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I remember my neighbor's (LG made maybe or possibly Frigidaire?) Kenmore Elite range she got back in 2006 had touch pad burner controls too, with each having a digital number display.

Sears did source from Whirlpool back in the late 90s-early 2000s when Whirlpool started making their own gas ranges. Wonder why Sears went to Frigidaire and GE. I guess Whirlpool isn't strong in cooking appliances.

For many years, Sears Kenmore ranges were made by Roper - gas in Kankakee, IL, and electric in Newark, OH. Whirlpool bought Roper in 1988. However, the Roper manufacturing facilities (in La Fayette, GA by this point in time) were sold to GE, with Whirlpool retaining the rights to the Roper name.

In addition, some Sears ranges (especially 40" electric) in the 60's and 70's were sourced through Whirlpool, but actually were made in the Kelvinator factory.

Jamie, I think ranges were most likely made in Kelvinator's Grand Rapids, MI facility. Greenville was originally Gibson, which became part of WCI in '67, and Kelvinator didn't join WCI until '68. The GR factory operated until late '87.

The Kenmore 40" ranges from the 70s-90s I believe were built on the WCI frame that dates from the late 50s or early 60s. As were GE ranges in that size and Frigidaire.

Somewhere along the line the Kenmore and Frigidaire versions were restyled in stainless with either a ceramic top electric model or 5 burner gas top with electric ovens. Sold under the Kenmore Elite and Frigidaire Gallery lines, I'm guessing these were still on the old frame, but with new looks.

The double oven 40" ranges have since been apparently discontinued and the Frigidaire Gallery version is now just a 6 burner range with a very wide single oven.

Speaking of Roper, were the Kenmore made by Roper ranges better than WCI ones? I heard they didn't brown as well as other brands, because Roper didn't use the top element for baking like GE and others do.
