Is there anybody here that is familiar with making lye soap?

If it is the procedure you are ooking for, you can find it through Google or a similar search engine. You have to be very careful with the Red Devil Lye.

I made some in the 90's when I was taking a biology class for extra credit. It was a hot mess and it smelled like rancid dishwater so I put a bottle of cheap cologne in it and it smelled good. I did it outside and used a Visions dutch oven that I had bought at a factory outlet store cause did not want to ruin anything else. Be careful because you have a vat of hot Lye water.Be careful of the way you mix the 2 together. It was hard to find hog lard at that time that is what you want to use because the soap will be a lighter color and purer.The Lye that I used at the time was Red Devil just besure not to use Crystal Drano because it is not pure Lye. I do not know what brand of Lye there is now because they do not make Red Devil Lye any more. Good Luck Carl

about 2 years ago I posted a similar question...I'd been buying lye soap from an Amish community in Kentucky...love the stuff...thought I'd make my own. Did some research and found several receipies on the net. Before I proceed I thought I'd ask here...I did and got several responses with good advice; but one of the members..don't remember which one...but one that post a lot and seems to be highly respected in reguards to sound advice..said "don't do it". Now... I don't know if he posted that because he could tell at some point in my life I was a natural blond or turly concerned about my safety...either way after I thought about it I decided I'd heed has advice. I contine to visit the Amish when I visit family in east Tennessee. I do remember there was something about buying lard and red devil lye...using a certain container to mix the stuff in and something about it creating a lot of heat. I found the Red Devil at the hardware store...apparently it is also used to make meth/crack.

Lye Soap
I know there is at least two of us here in the forum that are soap makers, myself included.
In soap making terms, "lye soap" means soap made with lard, "Castile" is made with 100% olive oil, or it should be! All soap is made with lye. After the reaction of the lye with the fats, oils, butters, or combination of the three, no lye should exists (after cure) and by the same token not too much fat, or no fat should remain either.
What is the purpose of the soap that you want to make? Bath, Facial, Laundry? If I know what you want to clean with the soap, I may be able to help with a simple cold process formula you can do yourself! Maybe just a 1 lb batch?
