Hi Guys,

Just thought I share my best friend(Gary's) new acquistion it's a pristine Hotpoint 1400 Supermatic, which i think maybe one of the first. It has no rust, no chips or scratches, complete with the instruction manual and reversible worktop in either powder blue or etched grey.

I gave it a run through the weekend works like a dream. It was scourced from a gentleman in Glasgow and was in the cellar of the property when they moved in some 20 years ago!! The filter nozzle is the hard grey rubber type which is in great condition, it came complete with original filling hose and spider spin mat.

The spinner absolutely whizz's and discharges at a rapid rate..Looking at the rating plate, i think it is one of the very early models as the serial number is very low...something like 17010, and being first piloted in Scotland could well be one of the first, plus the numbers on the back of the instruction card say something like (59/6) which makes me think it may date from 1959, which would have been before the national launch in 1960.

I have attached a few pics.

Cheers

Hi Keith.

Really pleased its has landed in safe hands. Congrats to Gary on his new old acquisition.
Intriguing that it could be one of the oldest and thank heavens that the cellar appears to have been dry. The machine looks mint!

Hi Keith. That's stunning almost like it had just left the factory. I'd be interested to see the innards on one of these as the later models don't seem to have changed much from an engineering point of view.

A video of this would be cool
Stephen :)

Hi Paul & Stephen,

Thanks for your comments, the machine is in great condition. The In-nards on these machines are quite different to that of later Supermatic's like the 1450 etc.

I have a quick clip of the spinner in motion, I will try and get it uploaded today.

Cheers
Keith

My New Supermatic!

It really is about time it arrived. Did you park the van with the Royal Warrant out front where the neighbors can see?

Now when you bring it through to the kitchen do mind the floors in front hall. Have just had the wood block polished. In fact think it is best if you take off your shoes before entering....

My son Sheridan will be here directly; he is driving down with his flatmate Tarquin. Such a lovely boy; he has won prizes for his embroidery!

*LOL*

Memories

Takes one right back, doesn't it!

Such fun machines, pity they never made it over to this side of the pond.

"Pity they never made it over to this side of the pond&

But they did Blanche, they did!

Well Canada at least - Scroll down to reply #6 to see it in a Sears catalogue, in a different thread PhilR mentions a photo of his mother with looks like a similar machine in the background, and Robert posted a McClarey-Easy brochure in Ephemera with also shows a version of this machine.

But thanks Laundress for the reminder of a great thread which I had intended revisiting :)

Hotpoint Supermatic

Another great find Keith, these are coming out the woodwork at the moment, was this the one off ebay last week?

Just make sure you check all those original pipes, wouldnt want a split hose on a tub of steamy water!!

Heres a few "Supermatic" pics, these are very different from the later models..direct drive spin motor and a pump connected directly to the wash motor.

Awesome find...............

........congratulations! It makes you wonder how many other washer gems are hidden in garages and cellars on this little island!

Fab

Brilliant machines keep turning up! rest assured, though everyone I dare say thinks will these pleasures ever end :-)
But as Keith has shown minters do exist, in my opinion the best styling of the Hotpoint twin tubs.
Well done

Hi Mike & Gary,

Thanks for your kind comments..It wasn't the one off ebay last week which had the dodgey spinner, I think that machine had a replacement filter clean tray if memory serves me correctly, blue not red - probably out of a 1420.

The hoses are in ok condition, still got an good amount of squeeze to them :)Gary, I think this machine along with the 1420 has the best styling of any twin tub, oh and the Philips TopTwin.

I picked up another rare beast about 2 months ago, needs a little bit of a clean up then will post, not sure if anyone else in the club has one..."watch this space"

Cheers
Keith

Another rare beast ??????!

Was it a vactric ? Was it? Oh come on , was it?
The hotpoint twin tub is a lovely machine , I am lucky enough to have one , unfortunately the filter flow spout is totally buggered so if anyone comes across one I would be most grateful.
Just got a Colston Ariston twinny , basically a Rolls in a 70s frock.
Photos to come later.
Best
Lance

I find that I must mention...

that the sobriquet "SuperMatic" was first applied to thermostatically controlled ala "Automatic Calrod" 8' deep well range units in the US on 40" ranges by Hotpoint, circa 1955, or thereabouts... the nomenclature as applied herein to latter day UK washing appliances, heaven forfend, is quite "Johnny Come Lately", at the least vis- a-vis the original application, as God and GE, intended... LOL

Morning Lance,

Ummm congrats on your recent find, now my recent find isn't a million miles off your find...just think "Impell-action" lol

I will post pics soon. Plus i must have a rummage down the garage and see if i have that spare filter clean nozzel.

Cheers
Keith

Impell action

Not a Rolls from Budica by any chance?
I really would be most grateful if you could have a rummage for that nozzle , I know you mentioned it before but I didn't like to bother you .
Cheers
Lance
