Highly illegal here with a match light oven.

Tim,
In the apartment I used to live in, the old Glenwood gas and gas had a match light oven.
I think it was grandfathered because it had been there since it was probably brand new.
A gas company guy who came to do an inspection one time had me light it while he was there, to prove that I knew how to do it safely.

The major rule was that you did not turn the thermostat out of the OFF position until AFTER you had successfully struck the match. Even doing that could produce a loud thump with flame jumping up into the oven, depending on the condition and position of the flash tube. A frightening situation was people who did not know that match-lit gas ovens existed and treated them as pilot-equipped ovens. Those situations often resolved with dislocated oven doors and people roughed up by being slammed into a wall or door.
Thats why they are prohibited here. No gas company can just hook up any match light stove legally, but grandfathered, who knows what is or not? But those of us that knew how to do it right are a dying breed.

I worked in a restaurant many years ago that had an old commercial gas range which probably dated to the 1920s. The oven and cooktop burners were all match lit. I was singed a few times!
