Not sure who else to ask for something like that then our community here.
I have a verry good friend who has her 18th birthday coming up (October, that is) and we love to make jokes about pop culture and fashion.
She is a person with a verry decissive style and I love creating outfits for her, and she for me.
Now, besides some other stuff, I wanted to get her a hat, like that sunhat that Samantha has in the Sex and the City movie. Made of straw or bast material, really big and wobbly brim. See link.
She has simmilar personality traits in some ways and a verry simmilar style, but she does not know that movie yet, so I'll get the fun of that present build around that moment.
Now, hats like this seem to be impposible to find and as I don't want to spent a fortune on one (50 bucks or so, not much more), I thought about making one myself. I do have a few months time (and will be traveling to London in the meantime for the still open shopping option), so I could have that project running on the side.
I do have 2 problems though:
1. How does one weave a hat? I could think of first taking 8 or 12 strings of a relativley solid material (like thin flexibel wood strands, a few milimeter wide), glue them into a star shape at one point in the middle, and the weave in a circle around that. At the end, just sew the thread that into the brim.
Does anyone know if that would work? And if so, how do I shape and measure the piece that fits onto the head?
Any help would be appreciated!
2. Which materials should and could I use and where could I get them? Anything to keep in mind on these materials? Which thickness of straw or bast fibre should I use? Any special kind?
If anyone has any leads on a hat like that that I could just order (or buy in a store) I'd be glad about letting me know as well, or if you could give me tips and directions on makeing one, maybe experiences, I'd be more then happy anyway!
I know you people are all awesome in at least one thing, mostly more, so I think you could give me perfect help with something like that as well!
