We visited the Culinary Arts Museum in Providence, Rhode Island recently and had the best time there! If you're ever in the area and are a real foodie, this place is a must-see! It features lots of vintage appliances, menus, signs, tableware, etc. with a special emphasis on diners of the early 20th century. Leaving the trip it inspired us to do a little diner food - fried chicken. I also included some footage of our trip to the museum.

kevin313-fried chicken is one of my favorites! I agree about frying it in a electric skillet too. I also like to fry them in a cast iron skillet or 2! Will try your recipe. Do you make milk gravy with the drippings? Nothing better over mashed potatoes!

Kevin, I've been looking for a good fried chicken recipe that doesn't turn out to be "Vegetable Oiled-Flavoured Chicken," with some disastrously flavourless skin of some sort. Looks like this might be the key!

My last attempt was a "Chicago recipe," IIRC. This called for the use of heavy cream, among other things. Had a crispy skin, but no flavour whatsoever.

Will proceed to make this one day this week for lunch or dinner, and I'll post an update with pictures to show my result.

This sounds great - I love fried Chicken

Kevin,

Thanks for doing these wonderful videos!  We drove through Providence last weekend coming back from the cape.  Next time we will stop and see this fun museum.  I didn't even know it existed.  Again. thanks!

Love the idea of doing it outside.  I don't have an electric fry pan but a friend gave me an induction cooktop (single burner) to play with and I think that will be a great use for it.

As an aside, there is another recipe for "fried" chicken only it's done in the oven.  Found it on NPR and have been wanting to try it but it is no longer on the site.  Need to do some digging to find it.

Regards,

Alan

no mess

When I saw this Cavalcade of Food post I thought fried chicken, what a mess! If that was me I'd have the electric fry pan plugged in out on the patio. You're not only a good cook but a smart one too. All the grease and spatters stay outdoors and cooking outside like that is fun. Your turkey roasted in a cooking bag was another good idea.

This is a very nice video. The museum shots are fun and Ralph's cameo was similar to Alfred Hitchcock appearing briefly in his motion pictures. Thanks for the entertainment.

Mr. Hitchcock in "The Birds".  I think Ralph's more the French Poodle type...

i HAVENT

Fried chicken in forever!!Looks good...hope you all can come visit again, I have a KFC chicken pressure fryer from the 60s we will have to try out..

Thanks all!!

While frying chicken isn't something we do often, every once in a while it really hits the spot!

@Jean - I've never made milk gravy but I've heard of it and it sounds great! This recipe doesn't leave drippings because of all the oil used, but I'd like to make it with some other recipes!

@washer111 - I hope you give it a try! Please let me know how it comes out!

@ron and Eddie - We will be back in Rhode Island again! We have a friend in the Jamestown area and we had such fun there - hope to get back there next year sometime! I'll let you know - would love to meet both of you and you can give us the tour!

@Alan - hope you try it! I think you could use your portable induction burner like an electric skillet - set the temperature and it should be good. Make sure you use a deep skillet.

@joe - frying outside is the only way to go! Not only saves on the clean up, but then you don't have that "fry smell" in the kitchen for three days! I'll tell Ralph to leash up a couple of chihuahuas for a cameo in the next episode ;-)

@Hans - Yes...we will come visit again (if you'll have us!!). Had so much fun with you and would love to try out the KFC pressure fryer for some finger lickin' good chicken next time!!
