Joe,

Wonderful! Your cake looks better than the one I did! Maybe because you had a nice glass of wine close at hand! The swanky mixer and Carmen McRae CD are fabulous! You folks in Palm Springs really know how to do it! Looks like you had a great time - glad your guests enjoyed cake and you had plenty of leftovers ;-)

I only have 1 word for this cake!

FABULOUS

I made it before work this morning to take and share with my co-workers and 1/2 of it is already gone. Everyone raved about it. This is most definately going in my recipe file. Thanks Kevin for the great recipes Please keep them comming!

California Celebration

I made four birthday cakes for the wash in at Kevin's.  We talk often about cakes so I made a  1 2 3 4 cake for Robert. Orange Chiffon for Rich, Hot Water Fudge Cake for Jon Charles and an Oatmeal layer cake for Greg.  We all talked about how much we enjoy your videos and wished you were there to eat it with us.

Kelly - I would have loved nothing more than to watch you in action as you prepared all that glorious food (per usual) at the Wash-In! While everyone was having fun with the washing machines, I would have delighted in the kitchen time with you! Ralph and I seriously talked about attending, but I'm leaving for a two-week stay in Paris in just a couple of days and we are also at the end of our semester here, so I just couldn't swing it.

We look forward to being able to attend the next AW shin-dig and meet everyone!

made it yesterday... and brought most of it to work today

and it was GONE!  It is a BIG cake for just two people... However, I held back some for us for tonight's dessert.  Will certainly make it again.

I did use a glass pan - need to get a metal one - but was very careful to keep the broiler on low and switch it on and off a couple of times.

Really easy to make and very moist and flavorful... Need to bring the recipe into work for one of the gals in the office.  One question, what is reacting with the baking soda for the leavening?

Only I was grooving to Billie Holiday instead of Carmen.....

OK Alan...how did you get away with using that Pyrex baking dish? In my book that's called cheating...all kidding aside the cake looks great and Billie Holiday is an excellent choice.

Alan - that is one good looking cake! Glad your Pyrex dish didn't pose a problem. The broiler on my '61 Westinghouse is so hot I didn't dare try it with a glass pan. The top of your cake is the perfect color.

As for Billie Holiday, she is a fine substitution for Carmen McRae. The two are probably jamming at the big jazz club in the sky...

well, i had a few tense moments when i had that cake under t

Kept an eagle eye on it and cycled it on and off a couple of times.   Was glad to get it done.  Will go to Bul$hit and beyond (as my partner calls it) to get a metal pan this weekend.

During the process, a neighbor knocked at the front door wanting to borrow some ketchup right away.  I let him in and then dashed back to the kitchen and told him he had to wait a bit until I was done with this.

Oven grills

Hi Kevin, this really looks like a delicious recipe! I'll sure try this one out. One question. Aren't your oven grills turned 180° from their "rigtht" position? In the position you're using them, what keeps the grills from falling off the oven side "rails" when you pull the grills out?

I have a GE oven, and according to the user's manual the grills are positioned "the other way round". The raised back side of the grills keeps them from sliding off the rails when they are hot and I pull them out.

Hi Emilo,

The oven racks in my 1961 Westinghouse stove were designed to have 9 positions - but these are only achieved if you "flip" the racks over. So, the racks can be used on either side, depending on where you want them placed inside the oven.

Best wishes,
Kevin

Man I'm Bummed! Spent all week jonesin' for this cake and stuffed cabbage. Went to the store TWICE to make sure I had everything. Poured a glass of wine, preheated the oven, got the pan ready...no oatmeal!!! Really need to have my meds adjusted! Thank god foe easy coconut pie.
