Has anybody seen the film yet? The NY-Times review has me curious:
Those shimmery, layered arrangements, those lyrics in a language uncannily like English, those symmetrical Nordic voices — they all add up to something alarmingly permanent, a marshmallow monument on the cultural landscape.

I could use some camp about now.

Did you know that at the time they did not know English.
So the words they were singing were learned but they didn't know what they meant.
It is hard enough just learning words of another language, but to sing them... ?

Boy......I've lost my Democrat/liberal/punk tendency to shame people out of listening to ABBA, but the whole thing looks w-a-a-y too saccharine to me. And Meryl Streep will now have to spend eternity in hell; With bad actors, acting badly.

To be asked to "feel the beat of the tambourine"---especially when there isn't even a damn tambourine in the mix---is lasting proof that ABBA, despite the current wave of revisionism, is still the musical equivalent of McDonald's. Worse, actually; more like those plastic-sealed hamburgers you can buy at a convenience store and heat in the microwave. Cheap 'n' cheery in the most vapid way imaginable.

So, I guess that's a 'no' from me.

But if a movie built around ABBA songs floats your boat, go enjoy it!

Waterlo!!!!!!

Saw it last night and went back to see it again today! This has got to be the best musical since Rent! The plot as well as the actors chosen for this are outstanding! What a refreshing way to end one's evening then begin one's day!

You'll Love The Live Version Too

I haven't seen the film yet (plan to maybe next weekend) but I have seen the live version at Mandalay Bay in Vegas. Different performers at the time, but it was great, rousing fun. Musicals don't have to always have a message. If you go see "Mamma Mia!" and expect to be entertained, you'll enjoy yourself.
And I have to respectfully disagree with Frigilux: I think ABBA's music is a notch or two above "Cheap 'n' cheery in the most vapid way imaginable." My boat floats and it's already sailing away!

Mamma Mia

Sometimes you just have to get over yourself and have fun. This was a fun movie. We went yesterday and are going back again on Sunday. It was just fun. No it's not perfect just fun. You come out of the movie feeling happy.
