Hi, was talking with a friend about intestine problems, and I just said her she should try use some mannitol, that unlike laxative won't upset your belly but just softens the stool...
She said she has no clue of what it was or where to find it...
Here is sold in whatever supermarket or pharmacy you go in powder or bar form, in the sugar and sweeteners Isle, because it's factually a sugar an undigestible sugar, it cost 20-30 cents for a 3 bar packet, and for me is the most natural, cheap and delicate way for these kind of problems...though looks like in the US it can't be found??? It sounds quite weird...she said she tried to walgreens,rite-aid and walmart...she didn't found it..is it possible? Actually online no results pops out....again, it seems really weird to me...I also tried to adress her to lax products for babies as it's often the active ingredient for such things, but nothing...
Any idea?

sugarfree candy

like russell stover usually has manitol in it as well as sorbitol.  both are sugar alcohols.  We use manitol to reduce intracranial pressure with head injuries.  If you eat too much sugar-free candy, it will give you the trots!

Louis, are you sure about that?
Mannitol can either by synthetized like pretty much everythung now or be found naturally, it's a sugar, it's found naturally in the "manna" which is a secretion of the Fraxinus tree that is used by centuries for this purpose hence the name Mannitol, it's not a drug, and about side effects everything can have side efects, even the water if you drink too much of it, kiwi or prunes as well.
Not sure who told you that stuff you mentioned, but it's okay to take it without consulting anyone, actually it's a pretty funny thing because it's an home remedy used by thousands of people over here and they would laugh for days at such a claim, it is something that just softens your stool by letting more water in it...much more safer than actual laxative drugs that are not indicated for certain types of problems..
Of course world is full of fruits and foods helping you in this also, but not everyone can or want to have them, allergies or else may also play a role, me I loathe kiwis, and prunes most of times gives me belly ache, as prunes like most of laxatives enhance the perisaltis and mechanic movement which is not at all a good thing if your problem are feces that tend to get too hard or you have other kind of problems..

So looks like no one knows where to find it in the US...maybe it's not popular, I think it's just a thing of mediterranean regions, after all the main it's a typical tree of southern Europe...just thought it was a common thing everywhere...

Glenn's link mentioned Mannose. There is a form of it called D-Mannose that can be purchased in health supplement stores that has a wonderful side effect. The sugar prevents bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls. If taken during a UTI, it will eliminate it within a day. Even better is that if taken daily by people prone to having UTIs, they won't get them because the bacteria can't colonize the bladder. Unfortunately, the medical establishment won't tell you about this and will insist on letting patients develop UTIs and then dosing them on a long course of antibiotics.

Here's more about Mannitol, had to search for an English website, I had the information in the past from a Dutch website. Mannitol is a diuretic. So if you're in normal health conditions and you don't need a diuretic, you have to be careful. That water has to come from somewhere. So in that case you need to drink more. Which you should have done in the first place when you are having such problems.

Mannitol used for laxative so by INGESTION not INJECTION (Injection of solution is to treat else like the link talks about) in the body keeps some water from being absorbed by your intestine hence being an undigestible sugar it will not even make up to your blood and system, it moisturize what for many conditions including a specific diet may get hardened up, laxative function, used this way by ingestion it's not diuretic meant as it make you piss more as it will never make up to kidneys, blood or anything like that, rather it will do kind of opposite as will retain a little water, we are talking of something like half or 3/4 of a glass of water retained in your intestine following suggested amount that will soften the shit... it will be more if you take more but it's effects anyway last until you've eliminated it . ...but again, we have a lot of herbal teas with actual diuertic properties and also laxative ones including foods having the similar potentials like onions, leeks for diuretic and prunes as laxatives and so forth that by no means are considered drugs...
Mannitol is a supplement....not a drug...
Since the article talks about the use of mannitol to treat other things and talks about injection and it's risks, it's like talking about the NaCl used in saline solutions flebos..too much will kill you, yet NaCl is table salt, a supplement and sold all over the places..if you eat or inject it changes like night and day of course... different things...
So again all you read there is for the use by injection to treat other stuff....not ingestion to take a shit.

Joe...

It's not my problem for now..it's a friend's anyway I think she did, she is following a diet.... it happens to me also sometimes that I have difficulties, but it doesn't last much and mannitol always solve it, I eat plenty of vegetables and I vary much....I think also some people are just more prone to develop costipation than others, me luckily am not one of those...

Isn't xylitol extremely sweet? On par with a sweetener? A mannitol bar is so light a 3"x1" bar that is the suggested dose for an adult doesn't even satisfactorily sweet a glass of water..I'd guess a teaspoon of sugar would sweet more than the bar, that is big in volume but so light in texture...very strange...
Talking about here in italy, xylitol can't be found in stores, perhaps in some pharmacy...
I know it's a sugar alcohol as well and is used much chewing gum, that infcat states about this effect out of it in the packages, though is as effective as mannitol...isn't it really sweet? I Imagine eating raw sweetener..maybe I'm wrong? I'm not familiar with xylitol..

The thing about alcohol sugars is that they are extremely thirsty and bind a lot of water to each molecule. Since the alcohol sugar cannot be metabolized, it exits the body carrying all of that water with it. Since it is not filtered by the kidneys, it leaves via the bowel. Like Howard's mother said from the best seat in the house, "I'm like an upside down volcano in here."
