The following showed up in my inbox from the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) today. The link below is so you can see how your senators voted. Congratulations to the 31 states who had either 2 "yes" votes or a "yes" and "didn't vote" registered. Shame on the representatives from AL, AZ, GA, ID, KS, KY, MS, OK, SC, TX, UT, and WY who only had "no" votes registered (either 2 "no" votes or a "no" and "didn't vote"). Only 6 states had split votes registered, and TN had a double "didn't vote."

Dear Charles,

The Matthew Shepard Act passed the Senate

Now it's time to follow up with your senators.

Find out how they voted and call them TODAY!

I have great news to share: the Senate has passed the Matthew Shepard Act!

The bill will soon be on its way to President Obama's desk, where he'll get a chance to make good on his promise to sign it.

This vote came on the heels of tremendous pressure from radical right-wing groups that used every trick in the book.

They called the bill the "Pedophile Protection Act" among other outrageous lies. They dismissed the barbaric hate crime that took Matthew Shepard's life as a "hoax." They flooded the Senate with hundreds of thousands of letters and calls.

But your calls, emails, and financial support for our work helped make sure the truth prevailed in the end. Without you, this victory for equal rights would not have been possible!

Ohio's Senators

both voted yes.

I called their offices like a good HRC email list person, and thanked them through the staffers who answered. It's a good thing I used my cell instead of my landline, it took over 10 minutes to speak to one staffer, but only over 1 minute to speak to the other staffer.

Senators Feingold and Kohl of WI both voted yes. Wisconsin wasn't the birthplace of the Progressive movement for nothing.
