I decided to take the plunge and start to rebuild my 1st may tag.. it is a 1964 i believe … i started to tear it apart …the bike tube worked well on removing the adjatater… and i picked up a spanner wrench… Im going to replace all the bearing and such just so i can get the experience..I know the brake is the older type that has a allen screw… is the brake the same on all of them or is it bigger on the early models ..I was wondering if i need two sizes of brake tools.. I am going to try the removal with a vice scrip for it seems better than the flimisie tools made today.. any advice is surly needed and enjoyed .. the machine is from southern cali and rust has had a field day on the screws and clamps ..so far i have made a great head way ….

It is comming apart slowly and im sanding and grinding rust off … the rubber parts are sitting in rubber and vinal restorer.. and the task of cleaning is going to take about a couple of days .. Than I will start to paint the may tag grey parts ..im cleaning the threds with a grinder wire brush …years of grease and dirt is comming off.

Yes, my project is going fine ..Its not as hard as I thought it would be .. You just need the old assembley line …Im painting some of the parts.. I sanded some parts but i should have had them striped and crome plated ..haha everything seems okay nothing major .. even the bearings look like they would go another 10 years ..Im going to half to paint the cabinets eventually they are quite faded compared to the top of machines.. I hate not keeping original when possible..

I still have a water valve problem ..It is the 3 type valve and they seem hard to find.. I believe this was a problem from the start .. Ill find out / I did take the valve apart and tried to rebuild everything so ill test it… I will half to make a new one out of parts if i cant get this figured out.. I dont know about the timer in these things for they look like from mars …

It's a rapid advance timer, Mark. Just make a diagram of where all the wires and hoses go to and from. Then you can take it apart and clean it. I'd be careful with it though. A machine of that age may have brittle wire coverings and rubber hoses. Also, a lot of those parts inside of that console probably aren't readily available anymore.

Before you repaint the cabinet, you might try and buff it out with some light rubbing compound. Sometimes that brings back the color.
