Maytag 1964 (about that washer guide kit)

I was able to order that part from ebay that one of you (qsd-dan) was kind enough to link to. The company lost track of my order because they suddenly sold out of these parts they've had no movement of in over two years. So, after two weeks they finally agreed that they misplaced my order, and sent the part. I suggested the fact that one of the members here linked to that particular ebay auction may have accounted for the sudden blitz of sales. So, the part is for the machine formerly identified as an A-502 Highlander. I also ordered the Repair Master book from my local inter-library system (it came all the way from Colorado Springs) for free. We are looking at the book, and although my husband thinks he knows what he's looking for, the book has a lot of pages, a lot of parts...So might anyone be able to point to the pages in the book (the red one from d-jones' picture on my original post now archived as thread 43408)that deal with the springs and sliders. Although the ebay auction had a photo with the square clips, what we received with the two springs is a set of four round discs in a very old looking cylindrical container complete with vintage label. Do we need to get the orange book that says helical drive, too? I could buy it as a pdf file, but I like looking at pages much more than screens, and printing out pages always takes so much ink. I tried to order that one from the library as well, but apparently the Texas library in possession of the book didn't want to loan it out.

Those round discs are the way they came originally and can be seen in the photo below(taken from the Maytag Helical Drive book). The drawback to them is that if a chunk of hard debris of some kind were to find its way into the motor carriage and get under one of the wheels, it could jam the wheel and prevent it from moving and the carriage from sliding, whereas the square type would just plow right through. But if you keep your cabinet clean inside that shouldn't be an issue.

 

Unfortunately, what little information there is about this setup in the Repair Master book can be found on pages 34 and 35, but I think you'll find the images provided are a bit dark and don't help much. The helical drive book from Maytag does a better job. But the truth is that the assembly is so simple, once you see how it's put together you'll likely agree that no other info is really needed. I've emailed you the relevant pages from the helical drive manual that explain how to check and adjust tension of the pump and drive belts, but you really should think about downloading the entire manual. If you like to fix things yourselves it's a great resource to have. You've mentioned that you prefer hard copies, so just put it on a flash drive and have it printed out somewhere and bound. You won't regret it.

Where and how are these Maytag Repair Master books available for download?

I'm just about ready to do trans rebuild on a 1966 Maytag A806 and its always good to have a repair manual on hand.
