Hello,

I have the job of selling off a couple late relatives' homes and the last thing remaining in my great aunt's basement is my great grandmother's washer.

From what I can tell, it appears to be a Maytag Gyratator Model 32. It is in restorable condition, the power cord is old and cracking, but the motor does run nicely. The agitator mechanism does work well, although the aluminum agitator itself does scrape a little on the base.

I cannot seem to make the wringer work. I am able to unlatch the flapper with the Maytag roller and separate the two rollers. The black roller in the top rolls freely. The bottom roller seems to rotate about 270 degrees, then a tab on the shaft stops rotation. I cannot find how to engage the wringer drive.

There is a large single wire going to the frame as a ground, I think, that is loose on the other end.

My desire to keep it is outweighed by my need to not accrue too much stuff, and it will be sold after I figure out the wringer, and get it out of the basement.

If you all could advise me on the wringer and anything else you think I should note, I will do your recommendations, then sell this thing in the next few months.

Thank you.

I have a Model 32 -

Without seeing a photo (or better yet, video) of the wringer, it's a little hard to determine the issue. However, it sounds like "the tab" you're referring to is the cam for the water diversion plate. If it's made of bronze with a split in the ring around the shaft, then that's what it is. It could be bound due to corrosion and/or hardened grease.

The top tension bar should just lift up to separate the rolls, unless the bearing hangers on the side are rusted and bound. Take a few pics and perhaps I can help you more advice. I've completely restored 5 of these machines thus far.

Ok. It will be a few weeks before I get back up there.

Does the roller run all the time when the motor is on or is there some activator like there is for the agitator?

Wringer control lever - dual purpose...

It engages the wringer rolls in either forward or reverse, and then when pressed down, releases the index pin to allow the wringer to swing into various positions (when using rinse tubs behind, for example.)

The machine looks rough (cosmetically), but I've restored worse to beautiful "show room" condition. If you're thinking of keeping it, I'd suggest cleaning out the wringer head (gear box) of old grease and replacing with NLGI Grade 2 grease.

At 2:23 in the video link, you can see the various components of the wringer head disassembled. Hope it helps!

The washer fully functions. The wringer handle does allow position rotation, and the wringer does work in both directions. I wrung out a wet sock and it did it well.

I have no place to keep this old workhorse and no real need for it. I did take the two giant porcelain washtubs already to my house and installed them, so I do the really filthy stuff there before a modern washer. I will probably see if someone local wants it, or it may go with the house.

Thank you for the advice.
