Hello everyone,
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Mike and I am a collector of many things. Vintage appliances has become one of my new hobbies. To complete my cross section of vintage appliances, I was looking for a vintage washer and dryer. I settled on Maytag for their decent looks, durability and availability of parts. I figured a pair of 806’s would fit the bill, my only dilemma is that a gas dryer was necessary. Vintage gas dryers are very hard to come by on the east coast, it appears that most people used electric in my area. On shoppers square an aw member oldskool was selling off some of his collection. He had several pairs of 806’s with dg808 big load dryers. We struck a deal and made arrangements to have them shipped. These machines were DD’d by oldskool for several years but have been in storage for the last 5-6 yrs. I figured some things would need to be done to put them in top shape but not a total restoration. I cleaned the dryer thoroughly, it was mosty clogged with lint and oiled the motor and tensioner. The performance of the dryer is very impressive.
The washer on the other hand has been giving me fits, it was rumbling horribly on the platform that my former washer sat on. I should have listened to my fellow aw friends who said get it off the wood at square one but I was not convinced! I ended up leveling the chassis and them attemped to adjust the balancing springs to no avail. Then I cleaned and relubed the damper pads which I thought helped a bit. The problem was still there. Also I corrected a pesky leak a the injector and the tub seal was leaking in the first few loads but then stopped. After a couple of lost days, I moved the machine to a concrete surface where I could test spin out. Much to my surprise, it didnt rumble! I said to my self, “they were right all along”.
After this discovery I balanced rhe springs as per the service manual. Also I managed to pull the agitator off to inspect the spanner nut and seal. It took two moving straps, boiling hot water and a 5 foot long 2x4 to get that thing off!!! Things didnt look too bad under there, i cleaned up the rust and put some grease on the shaft so next time will be easier. After all was said and done I can hear a clatter faintly when agitating and louder while the machine is spinning up. After it reaches full spin, it goes away. It is coming from under the machine by the pulley area. I pulled the pulley and inspected the thrust bearing, it seems like it is a bit loose to me but its a ball bearing and its not in its race with pressure. I cleaned and repacked it but the noise persists. After seeing many of Eugenes videos on You Tube I saw he was putting a dynamat like material inside the machine. I got some On Amazon and gave it a similar treatment. It does really help!
I have a link to the video and was wondering if anybody has heard it before and can confirm or deny my suspicions. Also here are some pictures of my new machines, looking forward to hearing from you all!
