Maytag 806 pair

If anyone is interested, we're getting rid of our old Maytag combo. The washer is a 806S and the dryer an 806 (I'm guessing colour is harvest-gold, with copper-toned edges). The washer worked until 1.5 weeks ago, when the switch broke to the lid. The dryer works but is working somewhat slower than it used to. Both are in pretty good cosmetic shape considering their age (I can take photos if anyone is interested).

We're located in Kitchener, Ontario (Canada). Best offer takes them.

Hello, one thing to remember is: photos are ALWAYS good! Especially when trying to sell something. Also, to be more accurate, it's a Maytag washer & dryer pair, not actually a combo (one unit that seamlessly washes and then drys).

If you wanted to keep and repair them, parts should be easy enough to find. Sounds like the dryer might need a good cleaning.

Plus these older models are better built and more reliable then the new stuff that's sold today.

Thanks for the info Kevin. I have no doubts that these old Maytags will outlast the next pair. I've already cleaned out the dryer 5 years ago when we moved in. It was absolutely filthy inside and the drying difference before & after was night and day. I've suspected that a cleaning would get it running tip-top again.

The main reason that I'm buying a new pair is for a larger capacity. Our family is larger now, and we seem to be in a constant battle with laundry. Having less loads would be a huge plus.

Anyways, I've shot some photos which I'll upload. Just to clarify, I'm not looking for top dollar on these machines.

My rationale is:
- The average consumer would want nothing to do with these old machines.
- I want them gone quickly (we have a small house).
- If I put them to the curb, someone in a pickup truck will haul them off for scrap (these guys roam the streets every "garbage-day-eve" in our city)
- If someone who can appreciate (i.e. collector) wants these machines, then I'd much rather they take them. Should there be more than one person interested, well then money talks .

Top of the washer

Here's the top of the washer. The only things worth noting is the wear of the text on the buttons, and there is some minor pitting in the chrome on the bottom (right above the lid). Yes, I'm not much of a salesman, but I believe in honesty .

Here's the inside of the lid. Overall its good, but there is some rust formed to the bottom/outside as shown in the photo.

Inside is good (the detergent cup which we never used could be cleaned a little - whoops).

Sticker on top. I didn't bother trying to shoot the model/serial tag on the back (I can if anyone really wants).

Dryer top

Here's the dryer, in action. The outer chrome has a bit of paint on it (although I easily took some off with my thunbnail). The inner chrome (the panel below the lighted area) has a 'haze' on it which also scraped off with my thumnnail (you can see a patch on the left side that I cleaned off). The washer also has this haze.

Obviously if I had time and was going for top dollar, there's lots of little things I could do (like the chrome).

Dryer drum

In good shape. The lint filter quit wanting to stay in about 4 years ago, so our HVAC neighbour suggested some foil tape that he gave me. That (wrapped around the middle 'knob' that the filter presses against) has worked ever since.

I like the big CSA logo, right on the metal plate (instead of the usual sticker).

The fronts

The fronts are great although the washer has taken some minor damage to the left (open) side, as seen in the photo.

I'd be interested in knowing as much about this pair as possible (namely the age). They came with our house, so I know little. I do know that they're older than our house (1979) and that's about it. I also know that there's some truth in those Maytag ads (with Gordon Jump) that I watched as a kid.

Thanks for posting the photos, they look to be in really great condition! I'm sure you are aware the washer is a "Suds Saver" model, which some really like.

On the age, if you can post the last two digits (2 letters) of the serial number, that is the code for the build date. I can tell you now they were built between 1966 and 1974, but probably after '68.

I have a nearly identical set, though not a suds-saver, from 1970-71 (the dryer is '70, washer '71).

I may be new here but you've came to the right place for sure to post an ad for a nice set. These are great looking machines, look well cared for.

Turquoisedude and I were wishing that Canada had something similar to YouCrate in the US. He has a nice Maytag 206 pair that I would love to get my hands on. If I was closer to Kitchener I would love to pick them up, but it's too expensive to ship big items like these. Moving companies want $5-600 to pigy-back it on a truck. Too bad, I would love to pick these up too!

I used my camera to grab the washer's serial number without me having to move the machine .

Age

I must say, having dates makes me even a little more impressed. I don't know their history prior to me getting them, but I'm impressed that the washer managed to go 35-40 years old with only a switch breaking. And to think that today's standard is 1-year warranties .

If you have relatives or anywhere to store it out in these parts, then they could be yours . You certainly sound like someone who could appreciate these machines.

I wouldn't mind keeping them, if I only had space. I used to collect vintage computers, but I now only have a fraction of my original collection. They simply took up too much space, so I found new loving homes for them. I still have my favourites though, and some of the micro-PCs. Major appliances are obviously a much bigger commitment than old PC's.

That being said, I saw the photos of the Aberdeen farm. I love anything abandoned (houses, factories, cars, machines, etc.) and love to shoot photos of them. I'd pay an admission fee to go wander around something like Aberdeen .
