Evening guys,

I'm arms deep in a seal/bearing job on an A806 and it looks like I have my work cut out in cleaning up this agitator shaft. Heck, I had to break out the torch to get the tub nut off.

Anyhow, it looks like the new stem kit (6-2095720) has an integral shaft seal. Am I correct in assuming I can add an 'old style' shaft seal 6-0A57420 as well? Any tips on tightening the stem kit so both end up sealing properly? Or am I out in left field here? Thanks -C.

Starting to look a little better. Took the shaft down to a consistent surface but lots of pitting to fill. I'm at 0.735" diameter. Did Maytag ever spec out acceptable dimensions on parts (or what the original diameter should be)?

Looks like the new seal is 0.675". Hmmm.

Rusty Shaft

It appears that the sealing surface on the agitator shaft would quickly wear out the lip seal on the replacement stem seal, and I wonder what the inside of the transmission looks like at this point.  The o-ring that seals the two piece agitator more than likely failed and didn't allow a filled tub to create an air gap around the agitator shaft, which often times causes the two piece splines to freeze to the agitator shafts.

You may want to consider pulling the top half off another Maytag transmission to ensure that the new seal has a fighting chance.

Hi Cory, I would definitely replace that agitator shaft the only way to save it would be to turn it down and add a stainless steel or brass sleeve to the shaft and finish it to the same original outside dimension as the agitator shaft other than that start with a better transmission. With either type of agitator shaft seal Maytag used the seal won't last long when the shaft is in that bad of condition.
