What in the world...

is going on with what is supposed to be chrome trim on this machine? I would buy this in a heartbeat if it was chrome as it should be. I am in the metro area. Do you think they painted it because it was pitted or something? Odd...

The A106 was the bottom of the line (BOL) machine. To differentiate it from the rest of the line, they painted the grey area, rather than chroming the panel. Cheaper to produce, and they pass along those savings to the customer.

In fact, when these debuted in 1966, the A806 and the A906 were the ONLY washers to have chrome on the panel edges. The A106, A206, A406, and A606 were painted. It wasn't until a few years later that Maytag started chroming panels other than the TOL models.

Wow....

Thanks, Ben. Good to know. I've just never seen one without the chrome. So best to wait for one higher up the line then. My current washing machine is on its last leg. I'm nursing it along until I find the right vintage one.

This A106 looks like one of the last of the breed; the trim strip was changed from the dull aluminum at this point to some kind of plastic coating. You can tell it's late because the control dial knob has the plastic "crystal" instead of the chrome one. Usually these models also had an all-turquoise agitator instead of the black one with the turquoise top.
