MAYTAG A107 WASHER

We have a Maytag A107 Washer that we purchased new from an appliance store in Phoenix, Arizona in the spring of 1975. We noticed that it was priced about the same as another well known washing machine (I think Whirlpool), but the other machine had a lot more chrome and looked prettier. I asked the salesman why the Maytag looked more plain but was about the same price. He told me that Maytag put the chrome on the inside of the machine - lol! - explaining that the expense in making the machine was in the parts within. Boy was he right! I am writing this on May 26, 2012, and we have used this machine continuously for all these years raising 7 children. The only repairs we've made to it over the years were replacing the timer, the timer knob, and the belts.

I have been told by many washing machine experts that machines like this are no longer made. The only other machine that even comes close to the quality of the old Maytag is the Speed-Queen.

Well, this old Maytag is stating to shake a lot when it spins because the dampening pads are worn out that suppress that shaking, and the transmission is now leaking oil on the floor. I have also been told that it isn't worth fixing and that I should now take it to the dump. I know everything dies eventually, but this is hard for me. I wish I could give this machine to someone who has an interest in restoring them or using them for parts like the motor which is no longer available. <span style="font-size: medium;">I too own a A107, from 1974. I got it last fall from a fellow member on this site. It was in new condition, being dormant in it's original box for nearly 37 years. It's my daily driver, with the exception of a small repair to the timer, it has been working flawlessly. I couldn't be happier. They may not have been the fanciest out there, but they had what mattered most, dependability. Machines like that should never end up in the dump. I sincerely hope someone takes you up on your kind offer and gives your machine a new lease on life.
