Maytag Washer Model A107A Series 03
Current Motor 2-1664-4 Model S59PXCLW -1900 1/3HP HZ60 Amp 6.9
Issue: Machine would fill and after filling timer would continue to move and you can hear humming noise at motor but motor does not engage and wash cycle will not start. Timer would continue right through to subsequent cycles(Reg to permanent press to delicate, etc). Sometimes if I pulled the plug and turned it on 10 minutes later it might start the wash cycle, now it won’t. Things I have tried:
• Over rode the lid switch. No change
• Replaced the timer. No change
• Checked both belts and pulleys for binding – Nothing binding, turn easily.
• Had the motor tested off the machine. It ran.
• Found that there is a black plastic box with what I am guessing is a motor switch unit on top of the motor – Wires run to it from the Timer. There is a button on the side of the plastic unit facing the motor that appears to move in an out. It pushes a small metal plate which stands between the motor and the plastic unit. I found that if I briefly push the metal plate toward the plastic unit and let it go, the button pushes out and pushes the metal plate so it leans against the motor. The motor engages and the wash cycle starts. At the end of the wash cycle, the metal plate pops back to a position between the motor and the plastic unit and the motor again appears to hum as if power is going to it. I then have to tap the plate/button toward the motor and the plate pops out again against the motor and the rinse/spin starts.
How do I figure out what is wrong? Thank you.
