Checked out KenmoreKid's Maytag A206 that won't agitate and here is what I found...when the cycle is ready for agitation, it trips the GFCI switch on the outlet..when plugged into a regular outlet, it buzzes and shuts down..this happens on wash and rinse on Regular and Perm Press...and it is grounded to a cold water pipe as well.. It fills and spins fine (when the dial is moved to those functions) and I went underneath and the pulley turns freely and the belts are in good shape...any ideas on this one?..it's a nice piece otherwise!

Checked the Motor Wiring?

I had this exact problem with the Highlander this morning! I had taken the motor out to replace the springs on the glide mount and when I got it back together, it would fill fine, spin and drain fine, but if it tried to agitate it would blow the breaker in the fuse box.

I found that I had inadvertently switched white and "brown" on the motor when I hooked it up. "brown" on the Highlander is a white wire with light tan stripes on it, so it was an easy mistake to make.

If your wiring all checks out, it's entirely possible it could be the start switch on the motor or the timer. If it runs one direction, the motor itself is good and the problem is likely external. I don't know if the start switch is replaceable by itself, but it is mounted externally on the stamped T-Frame motor I have in it now.

Sounds like a motor/motor start switch issue.

I don't believe a malfunctioning timer would possibly cause this problem, although I could be wrong.

The only other possibility I can think of would be a short or "short to ground" wiring issue.
