Maytag A211 Suddenly no hot or cold water.

Hello everyone! Total newbie here, although I must say that about 5 years ago I watched a youtube video and changed the nonfunctioning water pump on the Maytag.

Everything has been fine except for about the past 2-3 years... the cold water would just trickle in and I didn’t know what to do, so I just accepted my fate LOL!

Suddenly, about 3 months ago, no hot or cold water was coming into the washer. It stopped after a wash cycle. Since machine is in a detached garage… I filled it ½ full with water from the garden hose and was able to complete the rinse cycle. Agitates, spins, dial works, etc.

One other thing… sometimes the machine would leak about 1 gallon of water, was always in the back of machine... which now I think could be because of the water inlet valve not working correctly with the cold water? (I don’t know anything about this). But, I never worried about it because washer is out in the garage.

My question… should I pay for a repair technician to come over or should I just replace the water inlet valve? I have to purchase washing machine hose plyers first, which I see are about $23 at Home Depot. Hoses are attached to a blue plastic piece, hopefully I don’t break it.

Have ever removed the hoses and cleaned out/off the screens inside the intake valve. Simple, easy to do, turn off water to both hoses and remove hoses with pliers. Screens as then accessible and you can easily check to see if they are covered with sediment etc... This is a job anyone can do!

First, is there a humming/buzzing sound when the timer is set to fill?  If so, does the sound change when switching between hot (only the hot valve energized), warm (both hot and cold), and cold (only the cold valve)?

The next easy check is 1) shut off the supply faucets, 2) remove the hoses from back of the machine, 3) run the hoses each in turn into a bucket to confirm water flows, both hot and cold, 4) check if the debris screens in the hose connection ports on the water valve are clogged.

I will have to go buy the pliers... then I will check the screens and hoses.

I don't recall hearing any humming/buzzing noises when I was turning it off and on a zillion times LOL. I will have to go out there tomorrow and try it again.

Well… I received the hose pliers from Amazon. Turned off the spigots and removed the hoses from the inlet very easily. The hot water hose was leaking, not a drip, a continuous trickle! Water leaked out from inlet valve down the back of the machine for several minutes. I already had the front panel off, so I moved it and looked inside, it was completely dry.

I tested the hoses by dangling them out of a window and turned on the water, they both ran clear and clean, thank you for that idea. I have cut off the hot water that goes out to the garage.

The spigots are extremely old. If I can budge the bonnets, I will replace entire spigots myself… if not, I have to call the plumber : (

I’m going to rewatch my chosen youtube video so I can check the screens on the inlet.

Sorry I’m really dragging my feet on this. I have 2 more months of 100+ degree weather to get through. I will go out to the garage in the mornings with my coffee in hand and hope it's tolerable to perform at least one task at a time.

I purchased a multimeter at Harbor Freight. Basically get no reading when I check the solenoids on the water inlet valve. A "1" remains on the left of the digital display and does not change when I try higher ohm settings and turn the multimeter off and on to reset it.

Knowing that the cold water barely trickled in for about 3 years and now finding out that the hot water spigot was leaking a constant trickle... I am planning on replacing the inlet valve. Are you allowed to steer me towards the best online websites to purchase parts from?

Get a genuine Maytag water valve, the aftermarket ones can be very sketchy.

New Maytag water valve installed!

Thank you to everyone! Appreciate your advice and kindness.

I bought the new valve from the link gsd-dan provided. Installed the new valve, attached my leaking hoses... and, it works!! I turned the water off and disconnected the hoses because I don't want the new valve flooded. Will call the plumber next week, right now it's 101F here today, going up to 110F by Friday (I'm in the north end of City of Los Angeles). No A/C in the old barn style garage... looks like it will cool off a bit next week.
