Maytag A407 , how old is it?

Ok i think this washer is as old as me! My husband doesn't think it's that old. I'm in my 30s , is this washer that old? It's kind of a joke in our home , it came with the house when we bought it 11 years ago . It work fine, we just replaced it yesterday. I looked at some of your other pictures but i didn't find one like it ( but now i think it once lite up on top , i never knew that lol) Anyway could you help my proof that it's that old? Any picture of a manual that goes with it or an add or anything that says how old it is. Even just you telling me your opinion of how old it is will be helpful. Thanks

Hello, it would be unfortunate if they hauled it away, because we will never know the exact age.

But, it was built between 1966 and 1974. If you had the serial number we could nail it down to the month and year it was built.

3665300F or it could be 366530UF, i'm not sure if the thing before the F is a 0 or a U , kinda look like a U to me from what i can tell... That's from a little metal plate behind the machine.

Also is it supposed to lite up on top? i never knew that , the little orange light still lite up but not the whole thing... Anyway it's a shame all of you collectors are so far away otherwise you could come pick it up for free It still work .

oh and no they didn't take it away , it's still in our basement... My husband say it's very heavy ( not like the newer one we got yesterday) , he's not about to move it out of the basement by himself lol So it is now retired to a corner of the basement next to an old dryer ( the dryer is different, it's not a set, but it's old too from the look of it)

I would have kept that washer in regular service, it will outlast anything made today with some routine maintenance.  Your machine didn't come with a fluorescent light, just the orange pilot light.  What did you replace "Old Faithful" with?

With a frigidaire large capacity washer , it's "new" to me but we bought it used , it's 4 years old... "Old faithful" it's a nice name. The orange light still work Might keep it , just cause my husband doesn't want to get it out of the basement cause it's so heavy ... It was/is a good washer but i found it pretty small to wash comforters and stuff like that.... If it's that old it sure was made to last cause we never repaired anything on it in 11 years of owning this house ( came with the house)...

I'm looking at some of the picture here, i can't believe they made pink washer and dryer. Wow those were beautiful! I love pink! ... Whoever has those is very lucky , i think they're beautiful... ( i can't remember what they are , i just saw the pictures while looking at some of you all's pics )I wish they still made pink ones today....

March 1974 production date. The OOF didn't bring any results, the OUF seems correct.

I was thinking the small indicator light above the dial was something that was discontinued previous to 1973. My Mom got a new Maytag set in Aug. '73 (A207, DE406) and there were no lights above the dials. A while back someone posted a chronological list of changes made to Maytags which told when these lights were discontinued.

If the date of '74 is correct, maybe the console was replaced at some time with one from an earlier model.

Hate to say it, but if Old Faithful is performing as it was designed to, it will wasah better than your "new" Frigidaire toploader.  The design of the machine with its indexing tub (the tub moves as the machine agitates) doesn't turn over large loads very well.  Member Frigilux got rid of his Frigidaire toploader last fall for a front loader.  Old faithful is more of a jewel than ya realize.  Would love to see a pic of the dryer.

I can post a pic of the dryer next weekend if you like. I left the camera memory card in the laptop and my husband left for work with it today.

One thing i didn't like about the old washer was that i had to go back downstair to turn the knob to the dark purple part of the dial for it to rinse after it washed. Not sure if it was designed this way or not or if i was using it wrong but that's what i always did , and it was kind of a pain to have to do that...

I found the inside of it pretty small too compared to the new one.

About the little orange light i don't know if it's original or if it was replaced at one time, all i know is that it's there. I can look for tell sign that it was replaced if you like, just tell me what to look for

If you're having to advance the dial after the wash, it sounds like your timer may need a some work, but nothing that can't be fixed.

I grew up with a set of almost this washer, my parents bought them in the early/mid 70's from Polk Brothers in Chicago (I remember that because it came with Pong unless I'm thinking of the wrong appliance). They were trouble-free - surprising considering the jury-rigged hookups - for 30 plus years and a couple moves when they were left behind when the parents moved and left them behind as part of the sale, I hope they've kept them.

You've definitely got a workhorse there, and that will keep washing for many more years to come. Anything new these days won't last very long. (I'm 47 years old and still using washers and dryers on a regular basis that are as old as I am!)

I agree.  A replacement timer is all that Maytag needs to keep going for another couple of decades.  Keep it around.  You're going to be glad to have it when the new lightweight begins to falter in relatively short order.
