Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I actually fired up my Maytag A806 since it had been sitting for a few months but wasn’t agitating even though the motor was running, a short while later it started to squeal. Stopped the machine, laid the drain hose down to drain the water, removed the front panel, propped the machine up on a paint bucket, moved the drive belt by hand and that fixed that. The belt had simply developed a flat spot on the motor and just wasn’t wanting to move. Simply by rocking and moving the belt around corrected that issue.

Replacing the belts won't fix the problem. I had replaced the belts initially and the problem still existed. I removed the belts when I replaced the machine to use on the replacement. I say the brake assembly or transmission due to the research I did on my own. Again, I am just wanting to sell the machine to someone who feels they can repair it or use the parts that work.

Hi John, I’ll just rephrase what I said in reply #4. Basically a belt that has flat spots from sitting for awhile can cause it to not agitate or spin and since it went from 100 degree wether to about 70 and 60 something degrees, it caused the belt to develop a flat spots which caused my Maytag A806 to not want to agitate at all at first. Since rocked the belt and moved it by hand, that fixed that issue. To be sure the upper bearing wasn’t locked up, I ran it through a quick cycle and there were no ill sounds or effects and completed the quick test cycle. If a Maytag doesn’t want to agitate at all for sitting for a few months or a year, more than likely the belt needs a little coaxing by hand to get it to move.
