Maytag A606 Leaking...

Hi, Friends.

The last time my Maytag A606 was leaking, I came to this wonderful place and received some fabulous advice, which I followed toward a successful resolution of the problem.

Unfortunately, the washing machine is leaking again...during EVERY wash, so I need your help again, please.

I did pull the panel to see what's wet this time, and it appears that the water may be seeping from around that band that goes all the way around the tub. I apologize for not knowing the proper name of that piece. It is a silver band which goes all the way around the tub where the top and bottom of the tub come together, I believe.

Would someone be able to advise me as to whether this is a reasonable DIY matter and if so, what the name of this band is and how to replace it? (And where to buy it if possible!)

It should be DIY. Spray the clamps on the band with PB Blaster, Liquid Wrench, or something similar. Then take a large screwdriver, and try tightening the clamps.

Unfortunately, that didn't work...so...

I was wondering what the next suggestion might be?

I bought the Liquid Wrench and did as instructed, and in fact was able (though just barely) to turn the screw maybe a quarter turn or so, however the machine continues to leak.

I thank you in advance for any thoughts on what I might try next?

There is a jet spray nozel that is on the left side in the top as you raise the lid.Inside the black"sock"is a plastic cone shaped cylinder.Both the cylinder and its rubber sock need to be replaced every 5 years.Otherwise,the rubber sock streatches from water presure and leaks as the washer fills during wash and rinse cycles.This is one of the reasons people replace their old models thinking the leak is more serious than it realy is.

Another idea would be that you may need to clean the tub cover band gasket. Sometimes on the older units, the top of the inner tub collects moisture between the silver band and gasket and the upper edge of the tub and get rust/corrosion. Clean/inspect this and remount the ring/gasket.

The injector comes in three pieces.

Sometimes the hose from the injector to the tub cover gets old and hard and leaks right at the tub cover.

I already changed that whole injector mechanism...

but thank you very much for the suggestion.

I did that last year. Then it stopped leaking.

This leak seems like a different leak.

I could try removing that silver band around the tub, but first want to know if it will be easy to put back on! Seems to me I read something about one of these things being very difficult to replace once you've removed it. Maybe it wasn't the band.

Also, I like to have any parts I might need on hand before doing something like this. Might I need a new band or gasket?

You can remove the band. There is a rubber type seal, that goes between the two parts of the tub. You'll have to remove the top of the washer, and the top of the tub, to replace the seal. It "can" be involved.

Must be careful handling the band. Replacement tub-top seals are available, but IIRC the band has been discontinued except for "old" stock that may be around.

I've changed a seal. Tricky points are getting the top part of the tub positioned nicely, and getting the band tight enough (it must be QUITE tight).

According to the 06 Models service manual circa 1972... Pg.3-27 & 3-28

Removal:
1. Remove water injector hose from the tub cover.
2. Loosen the two tension bolts on tub clamp and remove clamp. It is not necessary to remove the tension bolts.
3. Lift tub cover & gasket from outer tub.
4. NOTE: When reassembling tub cover and gasket be sure that the trianguar rubber gasket is not twisted - all sides of the gasket are equal and it will make no difference which side is placed between the tub and tub cover. If a new gasket is not used, be sure old gasket is thoroughly cleaned before it is replaced. Wet the gasket before positioning between tub cover and outer tub.

Tub Cover Adjustment:

With the tub cover in position, place fingers between it and the top cover. Tighten clamps just enough to hold tub cover in place prior to final adjustment. There should be 1/16 to 1/4" vertical clearance between tub cover and top cover. When making final adjustment the tub cover should be:
1. Adjusted as high as possible just so the tub cover does not contact the inner lip of the top cover opening or contact the injector hose.
2. On models using the lid unbalance mechanism be sure the tub cover is raised high enough to provide engagement between tub cover bracket and unbalance arm. The bracket should be centered and square to the back of the tub.

When tub cover is adjusted correctly, tighten the tub clamps.

(*On a personal note, I advise you make sure that the band clamp is both sitting on the gasket properly AND also engaging the flange on the outer tub cover as well. The part number for the gasket is 211232 and is still available for around 10-15 bucks)
