I have a nice Maytag 606 that I inherited from a home purchase. It is in great shape and works good but if you don't have the clothes situated perfectly when it spins it goes crazy out of balance. Is the problem with the large springs attached to the drum? If you take the front off there are 3 springs attached to the drum. Could one of these be weak? Is there something else wrong? Thanks for the help.

Level.

Congratulations, you have one of the best washing machines produced. You should take care to be sure that it is properly adjusted, however, to ensure it serves you well for years to come.

Make sure the washer is absolutely level. Don't just eyeball it, but check it with a real level (if you don't have one, you can get one from a hardware store). If it is not level, it will easily go off balance. The front legs have wrench flats so you can screw them into the frame or out of it as needed. There is also a nut on the legs which should be snugged against the underside of the frame to lock the legs in place.

I have a similar Maytag and once I got it level, it became difficult to tell if it was agitating or spinning.

It is possible to adjust the 3 springs, but it is very rare that that is necessary.

Good luck,
Dave

off balance

Also , when washing large items; wash at least two of similar size & weight.
Example:Sheets & towels are NEVER a good mix; while they both may be large items, the weight of them when wet is considerably different.Good Luck!!

If you're lucky, you might be able to simply LUBE the pads with Polylube if they are still there but dry. It dosn't require a huge tear apart, either... Look at the thread about Revvinkevin's 700 set. I outlined how to do it there...
