Maytag A606

Friends, I was posting to a thread back in August about my old Maytag A606 that leaks periodically. I have a 9-month-old son, and therefore have had little to no time available to pop off that front panel to see what's leaking...until today. I am seeing rust inside as would be expected, but the area from which I see water dripping is what I think you all refer to as the "tub seal"...it is on the top of the black tub. Seems to be a rubber seal there (maybe?) fastened by a little gasket sorta thingie.

Can anyone assist me in repairing this? I cannot seem to post to the thread I was visiting in August. The guys there were SO helpful. But I can't get back there now.

Thanks very much, Ken. I read the thread thoroughly. From what I've read, it appears that I need to take it apart before cleaning it and using silicone? I assume that when it is suggested to clean the rust, etc...it means to remove the top of the tub, etc, first?

Can I try to clean the rust just as it stands right now? It is rusty around the tub, and the nuts/bolts are rusty.

The piece I don't understand for sure is whether I need to remove the top, etc.

If you're sure it's leaking from there, buy a new gasket and new bolts for the clamp. The correct bolts are nice, but bolts from the hardware store will do. Any appliance parts store should have the gasket. Clean the rust with a wire brush. As shown in the thread, I used a little silicone to seal it. It hasn't leaked a drop since.

One more thing, when you put the top of the tub back on, you just need to make sure it clears the top of the inner tub, and the top of the machine. The clearance is sort of tight, it just fits.

If you're talking about the seal that goes on the outer tub,held in place by the band clamp that goes around the outer tub,make sure you mark where the top part of the tub fits into the bottom.Mark how far down it fits into the lower part.It can be a PITA to get the top part put back where it doesn't rub on the inner tub and make noise.
