Maytag A606S washer

Hi,
I have a Maytag A606S washer that recently stopped advancing from cycle to cycle on its own. All the cycles seem to work just fine (it fills, agitates, drains, etc), but I have to manually advance the dial to keep everything going. Poking around online I am wondering if it is the timer, but does anyone have any suggestions on how to confirm if the timer is bad? (As opposed to something just being stuck and needs cleaning out) Also, any sources for manuals on this model to help me show how to take out the timer if need be? And where replacement parts can be purchased?

The washer otherwise has been great and I'd much rather fix it, if possible, than buy a new one.

It sounds like a bad timer motor. However, it could be a bad escapement, although it's somewhat rare for them to go bad before replacing at least one timer motor.

If you have no troubleshooting experience in the electrical arena, it's best to replace the entire timer itself.

Maytag sourced from 2 different timer manufactures (Mallory and Kingston). To make it even more complicated, they used several different timers for the same machine, whether the timer was set up for Permanent Press or not, ect. To top it off, there were even more timer motors and escapements used for each of those applications.

If you can respond with some info, I can narrow down which timer (or timer motor) you need. I'll need to know if the timer has the Permanent Press cycle. If it does, that narrows it down to one timer (or timer motor). If it doesn't, I'll more info to narrow down the search.

BTW, glad to hear you're willing to save the machine. It'll outlast and outperform just about anything made today!

Thanks for the help! I was guessing the timer/timer motor unit was probably to blame. At the moment I'm having difficulty figuring out how it comes off (I have a feeling there's a hidden screw somewhere I'm just not seeing!).

Thanks also for your help in figuring out which timer piece it uses. The unit does have the Permanent Press setting (along with the Suds Return option, if that matters). I've attached here a shot of the dial (sorry if the quality is a little low).

What is the escapement?

The chrome "button" in the center of the dial pops out. Then there is a small clip that holds the dial and the knob to the timer shaft. Remove the clip, remove the knob, the dial, andthe spring behind it then you'll see 2 screws that you remove to remove the timer.

What is the escapement?

I'm sure Dan or others will correct me if I'm wrong, but "escapement" refers to the part of the motor/timer assembly which regulates the speed of the timer. This way your 10 minute wash is actually 10 minutes, not 7 minutes or 12 - 13 minutes.

Part # for the timer is 204483. If you want to take a chance on replacing the timer motor only, it's 204663.

RevvinKevin is correct. The timer motor advances the escapement, and the escapement advances the timer.

The timer in the pic isn't a Maytag, but it'll give you an idea how the parts are generally arranged.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I knew there had to be a hidden screw somewhere, just hadn't found it yet.

Last question: what's a good source to find replacement parts like this? I've found the part number on various sites, but so far they all say it has been discontinued.
