Maytag A608 agitator drive shaft seal

I am new to this site, I have a question about the agitator drives shaft seal.
My Maytag A608 is 36 years old and has not been down for ONE day . I had to replace the tube mounting stem/tube seal .
But the lip seal that came with it for the agitator shaft will not work on an a shaft that is all corroded thus it leaks water.
And it looks like the proper mounting stem/tube seal kit is not available with the correct carbon seal (car water pump)type seal.
Where can I get a correct mounting stem that that I can install the correct seal P/N WP6-0A57420 (OEM P/N A4298), along with P/N 15666 washer and 15667 snap ring.
I am not about to take the trans apart to fix the shaft when if the correct seal was in installed it would not leek I have WP6-0A57420 seal but it wont work in the P/N 6-2095720 mounting stem.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

When I replace the stem and seal and the shaft is corroded I take a roll of plumbers emery cloth and sand the shaft down and then its fine and wont leak or ruin the new style seal.I might add some extra grease to the shaft.I do this all the time without a problem. I would never want to go back to the days with that kit that has that moronic snap ring and you have to lube the boot just right the new and improved seal is easier to install.

Well I sanded the shaft for an hour, it was severely corroded and has some play in it I doubt that the new type seal will ever work!!
That is why I want to use the OEM seal because it seals against the flange on the shaft and it doesn't care if there is play in the shaft, which my shaft has.
There for I need to find an old type stem to accommodate the OEM seal.

Unfortunately neither type seal will last a really long time on a pitted-corroded agitator shaft.

 

The lip type seal is the proper OEM part for this washer, Maytag made this improvement many years ago before Whirlpool bought MT.

 

Your best bet is to either just put it together and see how long it lasts or replace the transmission with a new or good used one, but in either event this washer is certainly not going to last another 36 years.

I did put it together and it leaked from the get go.
If I use the old type seal which seals against the flange on the shaft which is not corroded it will not leak as well the new lip seal would never have lasted 36 yrs.
The old type seal works the same as the one on the stem to the tube and it is the same as a water pump seal in every car/truck in the world and they go millions of miles.
Guess I will just have to get the stem housing modified to hold the old seal.

Would the top trans assy. no. 200813 or 2-813 part solve this problem??

It would help but I would still need a agitator shaft to work with the new style seal.
Were would I get the top assy, I would also like to know where I can find an old style mounting stem P/N 2-2521 or 202521 that accommodates the old style seal the one that is held in with the washer and snap ring.

The 200813 is the whole top half of transmission including shaft but after opening my big mouth ,they are hard to find.However,A 1980s machine is available everywhere on craigslist .An A310 has the same stuff.Buy a parts machine and use what you need and ebay the rest.I love my 310, its just butt ugly.Also if you feel like getting raped ,there is a 200730 shaft on ebay

Figure what the machine is worth to YOU, Compare models and part numbers on the web.Go to different part companies websites and searches as they differ greatly. You can learn your machine quickly and what will swap.I kicked out 2 wives that looked OK over the years but kept my ugly ass A310.My maytag is still quieter than them to this day.I would spend money on my old maytag before I even thought about a new washer.But hey,Thats my maytag repairman lonely opinion.

After more research Beekeeney and redcarpetdrew have your answer.I think it is seal 6009841.Good luck getting the appliance veterans to help though .Hell, I can't get em to say you're welcome.I am finding certain techs are too learned to be here.Maybe we should pay extra.

OK-- If you want to mess around with a badly pitted shaft go to ebay and enter A4298 seal.

Well I put an A4289 seal in the machine using the new style mounting stem and no more leaks, because that is the way it was designed to work!!
