Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

My comment wasn't pointed at you Jason, just the population in general. If I lived in Iowa, there's no way my laundry would be washed and dried in anything but a Newton Iowa built Maytag.

I’ll just pass on the Maytag 808 dryer in Iowa. It’s too far plus will cost a lot to have it shipped from Iowa to California. I’ll keep searching for a Maytag 808 dryer but just want to locate one as soon as I can. Maybe even try to locate a junker 806 dryer so I can take the chrome strip off of it since my gold trimmed Maytag 806 has the chrome strip on top of the front access panel.

To continue this thread on, here’s my Maytag HOH parts haul from the appliance junkyard in Glendale Arizona. Got 4 blower wheels (one of them is metal with the 16 vanes on it), got 3 door gaskets (surprisingly were in good shape despite being outside for many years), got a few door switches (one of them is for a Maytag DE806 with a drum light), lint screens (2 of them are the older metal type that came off of the highlander dryers there), a few Maytag DE306 and DE406 dryer timers, 2 motors (need to be cleaned up and oiled), a complete wiring harness for a Maytag DE306/DE406, drum light socket, drum, last but not least a Maytag DE806 console along with a chrome strip.

HOH dryer parts

Hi Sean, those old pot metal blower wheels were fun, but the groove in them where the belt runs would tend to wear out in them. You may have to straighten the groove up if you want to use them to keep it from slipping.

You should also save some idler pulleys and bearing and drum shaft, and I would also save some of the main drum bearing assemblies for those if you want to keep them going forever, those both fail occasionally.

They were fun dryers, but frustrating to work on and kind of just average performers. It was probably the worst product Maytag ever made them selves ,that in the ill-fated reverse rack dishwashers Maytag had to abandon both these products in order to have significant sales because consumers just didn’t like either one of them.

John.

Hi John, I plan on going back sometime later this month to retrieve even more HOH parts. Next time I go, I am going to snatch up a few blower housings from the Maytag Highlander dryers since they use the roller type bearings, and many other HOH parts while I am there. Hopefully I can get more parts and hopefully machines but unfortunately most of the stuff that’s there towards the back (mostly stoves and some washers) is going to be gone next year, there’s a ultra rare 1957 Whirlpool Imperial 2 speed washer I’d like to get along with a Wizard dryer as well. Don’t know if I’ll have room for those machines but if not, I’ll just pass them on to someone else in the club who wants a machine to restore and add to their collection.

That Maytag 806 dryer console isn’t quite what I was looking for but snatched it up just because. It’s missing the fluorescent ballast, going to have to search for one and I am sure they can easily be found on Amazon or a local hardware store. Going to have to drill out a hole in the blower housing for the drum light as well.

Now here’s a question I have, where do I find a fluorescent ballast and sockets for a Maytag 806/808 console? Looked on Amazon and other various websites to see what there was, and there were some ballasts and sockets available but didn’t look like the originals from photos in the archives of Maytag 806/906 consoles taken apart.

Did the metal blower wheels spin slower? Or did they just move more air from the higher fin count?

Good score on the control panel! I presume since you didn't come home with the fluorescent sockets or the tub light socket that the machine had been pretty well stripped for parts? If an 806/606 dryer is there, grab the carbon brush and brush holder too next time you are there - those are impossible to find.

Maytag DE806 that was there was all there except the fluorescent bulb and ballast was missing. Someone either removed it because it stopped working or was cobbled together from other HOH dryers since there were a few HOH dryers that didn’t look quite original, there was a Maytag DG306 there but was converted to electric at some point since the burner and shroud were replaced with a electric heating halo.

I will be getting more parts from there, most of the stuff towards the back is going to be gone next year (mostly stoves) and hopefully some of the Maytags are still there when I go back later this month. Maybe I’ll be able to talk to the owner next time I go there and see if I can arrange something, I mentioned they could strip all those machines down for parts and list them on eBay and one of the workers there was like “huh, sounds like something we should have been doing all along”. There’s a few machines I wish I could get from there such as the ultra rare 1957 RCA Whirlpool Imperial 2 speed washer, Wizard dryer, and a Norge positive air flow dryer but they would be sold to other collectors since I am limited on space at the moment. Going to probably end up selling my Maytag A810 set next spring since my A806 set will be a duplicate and really don’t need 2 of everything.

I believe those older Maytag blower wheels move more air but will have to see when I experiment with it one day to see if there’s any difference in drying speed with the extra vanes/blades it has.

I am still looking for a Maytag 808 console but this 806 console will work in the meantime, just won’t have temperature selections and just will have one temperature which is low heat.

Here’s my Maytag A806 set after searching and inquiring for one, don’t have that much to do other that do some cleaning up and tweaking to the washer. As for the dryer, don’t have much to do to it other than locate a fluorescent ballast/socket and bulb for it along with wiring the drum light in. Once I get those things done, they’ll be ready for service 😀

Thanks! Just need to find the fluorescent sockets and bulb for the dryer along with hooking them up. Got the parts from that appliance junkyard in Glendale. Want to try to get a few machines from there as well since most of the stuff towards the back (mainly stoves) will be gone be next year sometime.

I think it’s by choice but I am not sure. Probably want the stuff gone towards the back since they aren’t making any money on it, I did suggest they should just get rid of all the newer stuff while I was there along with stripping down some of the machines for parts since they have at least $3000 or more worth of good parts out back such as transmissions etc. There’s a ‘57 Whirlpool Imperial washer I’d like to get along with a few 50’s Kenmore dryers, a early to mid 60’s Wizard dryer (rare as hen’s teeth) and a Norge positive air flow gas dryer from the mid 60’s or so. Even if I don’t keep those machines, I’d rather them go to other collectors in the forum who are going to appreciate them and yes they do need work but there’s machines that came from the Aberdeen Farm many years ago that were brought back to their former glory.
