What did the "load sensor" agitator in Maytag dependable care machines actually do? Was there any sensing of the load occurring at all? A relative has had one such machine since it was new in 1997 and I never thought to wonder about this name until I used it last weekend.

*I think* they're referring to the outer agi vanes being flexible rather than rigid. IMO marketing blew that feature out of proportion calling it "load sensing". IF that's what it's referring to.

Like every racheting agitator with short stroke action it requires the water level and load to be sufficient to hold the agitator corkscrew in place while it clicks and rachets to another half turn. There is no sensor or magic that happens. Just like a socket on a rachet.

Not exactly....The Maytag LoadSensor is a different animal than what Whirlpool uses. The Maytag agitator uses a system that allows for the spiral to move more with larger loads and less or none with lighter loads. With big loads the spiral will move faster to drive the load into the base area. With lighter loads it will move with the base and ratchet only when it needs to.

Actually, yes. The Maytag system used a series of 'marbles' to advance the corkscrew if needed. There was a 'clear' agitator that was for demonstration purposes when the agitator first came out. That's why the Maytag agitators make more of a clinking noise that would remind one of marbles...

MT LAOD SENSOR AGITATOR
Yes the MT LS has a little friction in it so if it doesn't contact any clothing the top spiral section just moves back and forth with the bottom section. Bottom line it doesn't make any difference both the WP style and the MT style work very well, dual action agitators are the best thing that ever happened to top loading washers.
