Maytag agitator question

Has anyone tried doing different agitators in a Maytag washer?
I’m thinking about purchasing this agitator and fitting it in my Maytag A512 long stroke, on the flipside, has anybody put a power fin agitator into a Maytag Wringer?

The wringer agitators don't fit securely on the Automatics. IIRC they ride high on the post and pop up and off after a couple of oscillations.

 

I tried a couple and then I found a wringer "style" agitator that was made for some of the BOL automatics in the early sixties. I though these were interesting because they disappeared under the high water level. Maytag even made accessory fabric softener dispensers that fit on top of them.

 

Vice versa should work but I think they wont seat completely on the wringer posts.

I tried the old style "Gyrator" made for automatics in my 806 before I souped it up with the 50 cycle belt and pulley kit. It was a three star mess. The faster agitation did not go well with those high fins and, instead of promoting great turnover, it just tangled stuff into a rope. The old Highlander models with the narrow post Gyrators agitated at a slower speed and, while the turnover was not great, it did not make the mess that the Gyrator did operating at a higher speed.

If you put a Power Fin in one of these machines, even with the old transmission you will get better action and super great agitation if you put a 50 cycle pullet kit in the old machine.

Usually due to differences in splines winger agitators won't work for most Maytag automatic washers, and vice versa.

I Must Have Enemies! Never Ending Saga Of Maytag Wringer Agitator

Here's me; just trying to get a functional agitator with lint filter for my Maytag conventional washer. About our first attempt less said the better. The seller sent the missing spline (NIB), but without an arbor press have no real way of installing. Am *NOT* going to purchase one just for that...

Okay, although the funny thing is the

Westinghouse wringer washers do have the same spline as the Maytag, as the Westinghouse and Simpson/Pope use the same transmissions, as I know The agitator spline is physically the same on a Pope/ Simpson wringer washer So I’m sure they’ll fit,

The difference between the Gyrators for the wringer washers and the automatic washers is the collar that extends down to help the Wringer Washer Gyrator seal the top of the transmission from the water in the tub and this prevents it from seating properly in the automatics. The splines are just the crenelations that interface between the transmission and the agitator.

Before the Low Post Drive design for the transmissions and Gyrators was invented, Maytag had a high post drive and the shaft that extended up through the tub was aluminum. One of the tests done on wringer washing machines by one of the testing organizations was to fill them with water and something caustic like washing soda and let them soak hours or overnight, sort of the forerunner of the endurance run. The Maytag was severely dinged for the way the alkali ate away at the drive post column and they posted pictures to back up their findings. I saw that in a 1950s GE automatic also after 30+ years of use. So Maytag went to the Low Post Drive to protect their transmission. Of course, Maytag designed all of their washers so that they would not hurt themselves, whether or not they washed clothes.
