The AMP (Automatic Model Pump) was indeed Maytag's first automatic, from 1949. That, however, is all I do know about it, except for the fact that I would love one some day, when I have the room.

I got one in 2006, here is the link to our archives. Pictures and information are there, however no video. The Maytag AMP had a solid tub with an inner perforated tub. So it had to spin to expel the water. They don't go into a strong immediate spin like the Frigidaire of the time (Unimatic), but they do a nice spin full of water.
The washing action is strong with good turnover. After the wash is a spin then a flush drain, where fresh water flows during the spin, for about a minute, then to a full tub rinse. They do clean clothes very well, but since the spin is around 600 rpm vs. 1040 for the Frigidaire, the clothes take longer to dry. (But perhaps were not as wrinkled).
All in all a fun washer. I set mine up with a switch in the back to allow it to wash and spin with the lid open. The dealer could install a kit with two toggleswitches for in-store demonstrations of fill, agitation and spin. Instructive for owners of wringer washers.

I happen to have the washer and the dryer. Sorry I don't have a digital camera so I can't post pictures but they were wonderful machines. 101P & 102P
The 'Supermatic' 101 and the 102 were squashed in the middle - between the original AMP/A2MP and the 'All-Fabric' 140 center dialed machine. The 101P was built from 1954 through 1955 - with the 102P replacing it was produced from 1955 through early 1957.
The 101P featured the rear controls and was the first Maytag to have a removable front panel. The 102P was the first Maytag with a Soak cycle and also featured the first tub light in a Maytag. The light was a lamp built into the lid. The lid had a little window in the base for the light to shine to the tub with the hatch open.
Here is a picture of a 101P that needs just a little bit more before the restoration is completed.

Ben---thats a beautiful 101P. I remember those all over the place in Atlanta when I was growing up.
