Maytag Automatic won't drain

HI all, My Maytag A 212 model just had a new motor and belts put in it a few hours ago. The machine hasn't run in two years due to a flood and then motor failure in the machine. Here is the problem. I put some water in it and all works well EXCEPT it won't drain. I finally got it to drain just the last few min. of the spin cycle on regular. I tried it on the perm. press cycle and the delicate cycle and no drain. The tub turns with water in it but will not drain.
What do you guys think is the trouble? Will I need a new pump? Thanks for your help. Gary

I would check for clogs in the hoses, from the outter tub, to the pump, out the drain hose....

with the front off, and the machine running, either in agitation or spin, you should see through the pump housing of water sloshing about inside....

is the pump belt at the correct tension?

If the drive belt tension is too tight, the pump will not operate properly. Likewise, if the pump belt is too loose, it won't work. You should be able to squeeze each side of the belts in together a couple of inches in the middle. Maybe someone can explain this better, but the tension is important. If you have checked this, I'm sorry. I don't mean to insult your intelligence. I was just always told about how important belt tension is in Maytags.

When the tub was spinning and no water drained, the motor started to smell hot.. I thought that that may be because it is new and didnt think about the tightness of the drain belt.

well, is the pump turning, or is it froze, that alone would cause a burning rubber smell from belt....if not actual smoke itself...

take the belt off the pump and spin the pulley by hand, does it turn freely?....

Just had a similar problem with my A712 although I couldn't get it to drain AT ALL. Had to replace the pump. The pump itself is only $70 but I'm not the least bit mechanical so I got hosed in labor costs. My washer also sat unused for a period of time. Since yours drains in a specific cycle you may have a different issue.

why are you paying 70.00 for a 20.00 pump?......

ebay....sometimes cheaper, with or without free shipping....shop around......

3 screws, two clamps, slip on the belt, your back in action......

Thanks all for you help. Yogi, how freely should the pump turn when the belt is off? I can turn it with my hand but not without some resistance. The belt seems to be way too loose. How do I tighten the belt tension?

the pump should turn with ease......depending on the resistance, the bearings/seals could be worn causing it to drag....

tension is a little tricky with a Maytag, not too loose, and not too tight...3 screws on the pump allow for some adjustment....it can be snug, but not cause the motor to move, motor should be allowed to move from slippage of the main drive belt, you don't want to sacrifice one for the other....

about the best setting is you should be able to pinch the pump belt together in the middle without causing the motor to slide....

another thing to try, is remove the pump belt, and with an empty tub, set to spin, if you no longer have the rubber smell, chances are, the pump was causing the issue.......you can basically do the same with removal of the main belt to check the pump....

pump rates if I am correct, full level with no load, small tub 60 seconds, large capacity 90 seconds....or less

I would like to find one of the larger pulleys for a quicker pump out....

Thanks for your help on this. I can pinch the belt together but the pump pulley is difficult to turn, seems like it is dragging. I called the repair man who put in the new motor today. He said that he tried it through all cycles before he left and it was ok; not so much now.
Two years ago I had a flood in the basement due to an overload of rain etc. that caused the basement to have a foot of water in it.
It looks like I am going to have a new pump then. Happy washing. Gary

HI all, back again with an update

The new pump was installed today and everything works like a champ! The shaft at the bottom of the old pump that is turned by the belts was very tight and was barely able to be turned by hand.
Cost of a new pump $25.00 and $45.00 for installation.

I have a question which is: How long did or does Maytag use that particular pump? Thanks, Gary
