Just bought a townhouse with older appliances. Trying to decide whether to keep or replace the Maytag Centennial dryer (Model MEDC300BWO) which, according to the serial number, is 11 years old. It operates, but runs really hot even on lower temperature settings. (We plan to get the dryer vent cleaned/inspected to see if that makes a difference.)

Hello and on behalf of all members, welcome to AW.org. I think you should keep that dryer. Those Centennials are based on the very reliable and good performer Whirlpool 29 inch wide dryers. It is a very good design that Whirlpool launched in early 60s and they are still producing it to this days. Plenty of new OEM parts still available. I have one Whirlpool badged (gas) from 1987 in my collection. We use it 3 or 4 times a week and the original belt broke just last month.

Good luck and let us know. Post some pics

Indeed, the previous owners likely never maintained the dryer.
Inside the cabinet dust/lint accumulates.
The blower fan blades get clogged.
The vent also gets buildup of lint.

When I first overhauled my Maytag dryer, I found a dead bird in the vent line due to them making nests.
I put on a bird-free outside louvered and screened outside vent cover.
Now, it made a world of difference in performance and even lowered the time it took for drying.

My experience with the Whirlpool 29” top filter dryer pertains to the pre 1966 models, however I will say they are easy to work on, make repairs, perform very well. Despite mine being from 1963 (has since been converted to a Mark 18), the layout of everything inside is essentially the same.
