About a year ago, one of the gears in the transmission of my Maytag dependable care went out. I found a replacement and replaced it, after cleaning the transmission and all parts out thoroughly. I was planning to go back with a maytag gear oil but my brother talked me into Lucas synthetic gear oil (80wt). The washer has performed fine but is noticeably louder, likely due to the lighter weight of the oil.

Question 1: With the transmission be ok with this oil or should I go back and replace the oil.

Question 2: When I went looking for the gear inside the transmission, it was difficult to find a replacement. Most suppliers wanted to sell a rebuilt transmission. Is there a supplier that sells parts for the transmission?

I have the correct oil in stock, if you have the older helical transmission I have some internal parts. If it the orbital, I only have the agitator shafts


 
It's an orbital transmission (Model LAT3500AAE). Will that oil also work with an orbital?

Do you think it's imperative to replace the oil or do you think I'll be ok with the synthetic?
 
Remember that Maytag used 34 ounces to fill the transmission. That's 2 more ounces than a regular quart of oil. Probably doesn't make a difference especially in an orbital, but just throwing that out there.
 
Gear Oil Option

I would suggest using the transmission oil mentioned by Eugene from Lorain Furniture in his post above.

However, if looking for an option, I have also used Sta Lube GL-4 85W90 Gear Oil from NAPA Auto Parts (link below.) It is not corrosive to copper, bronze, or other non-ferrous alloy bearings and bushings.

Not to dispute qsd-dan because I have tremendous respect for his Maytag knowledge, but I have found that filling a Maytag helical transmission to the top of the bottom half uses slightly less than 32 oz. of oil. I always seem to have a little left in my quart-size bottle. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

You need a heavier weight oil. Synthetic isn't necessary.

Either the Maytag OEM, the Sta-Lube or another GL-4.

Fortunately, it's an orbital trans and the oil is easy to change.

What year transmissions are you working with? Pre 1966 transmission used less oil and you'll have several ounces left over. I use the leftovers for lubing brake packages and damper pads on pre 1966 machines. All of the 70's and 80's transmissions I've rebuilt took a full 34 ounces. Maytag did minor modifications to the late 60's transmissions, one of them was reengineering them for slightly more oil capacity. I only have one post 1965 Maytag washer from the 60's (1967) and haven't cracked open the transmission on that yet. Still trying to get the damn 8 finned agitator off of the shaft without destroying it.

I’d use something called windbag and that’s what Lorain Furniture did to get a stuck agitator off of a 1978 Kenmore 70 series he refurbished 3 years ago back in 2018.
 
I don’t think I ever rebuilt a transmission older than perhaps the 70’s , but I find that the older helical transmission take just about the full bottle. Maybe -2 oz or so.

The orbital I use about full bottle -3-4 oz.

You should just use the correct oil, it’s a once every 40 year replacement. A colleague of mine once used synthetic for a helical transmission and he said it was a disaster because the oil was thinner than oe and was passing through the lower seal.
