Maytag DE806 Dryer Rehab

Okay Maytag fans here it is.
I finally am getting around to cleaning and testing the 806’s. I want to sell them ASAP and to that end will be giving them a test and refresh. I have assumed they are runners but time will tell.
Following a redcarpetdrew thread I figured out how these come apart. So funny how older stuff has so many different fastener types whilst newer stuff has only a couple screw types used throughout.
I guess I need a new front seal, no doubt Walmart or Ace Hardware will have the part, right?
Heating element also looks like it’s toast...{sigh}

That’s a nice Maytag DE806 but whoa! Looks like something fell onto the heating element and burned and caused it to fail. Hopefully you can find a new inner seal since the inner seal that prevents items from falling onto the heating element is completely gone. Hopefully you can find a new heating element since it’s broken open and won’t allow it to heat.

When you oil the drum bearing I would use something like motor oil since that’s what I used on my 1973 Maytag DG606 I converted to a DG306 and has been running smoothly ever since I oiled the drum bearing earlier this summer. Reason I say motor oil is it will work on the slow turning drum, and I would use turbine oil such as Zoom Spout for the blower/fan when you oil it.

Now back to the felt seal(s) I mentioned above. The electric Maytag HOH dryers need that inner felt seal to prevent items from falling onto the heating element from shorting it out or burning. The gas HOH dryers don’t need the inner seal since there isn’t a heating element to short out on the gas models and if something does fall into the heating shroud/halo on the gas models it won’t really effect it and will just sit there until you completely take it apart to service it and clean it out. The gas HOH dryers however need the outer felt seal to help direct the air flow through the burner and air mixer and if that seal is compromised it won’t allow enough air through the burner and the high limit thermostat will kick the burner off until it cools.

So far my Maytag DG606 I converted into a DG306 seems to work well and the reason why I converted it into a 306 t8med drying dryer is the electronic dry control wasn’t working properly and spent hours trying to fix it and it still didn’t want to work properly and the reason it didn’t want to work is the wires going to it were quite corroded from the years of constant burning pilot light and I usually keep the pilot light off when I am not using it and only light it on days or times I am going to be drying a load of laundry in it.

Inner and outer felt seal? The drum had the remains of a seal around the outer front edge.
Where do I find the other seal? Maybe it’s completely gone! Yes I looked at redcarpetdrew’s pic, my inner felt seal is gone....in his old thread he even warns to replace it or risk the heating element!
It seems I need to get this white ring off to remove drum from the frame, any hints on that? The eight nuts have been removed.

That thing you took all the bolts out of is called the spider. The shaft the drum rotates on is permanently attached to it. To remove the drum you'll need to gain access to the other end of that shaft and remove whatever retaining devices are installed to hold it in place. Then the drum, spider and shaft come out together. First you'll need to remove the large pulley from the back. Then the back half of the blower housing comes off. Once that's off you'll be able to remove the blower and then you should be able to see the snap ring that holds the shaft in place. Remove the snap ring and you should be able to pull the entire drum assembly out of the fitting, though it's been a while so I may be missing a step. Proceed with care and take a lot of photos as you go to help keep it all straight in your head for reassembly.[this post was last edited: 8/19/2020-01:44]

I would so much Love to have Copper over my Harvest Gold. I love my 806's but if I could just Trade my Gold Cabinets for Copper, I would surely do it!! Of course turquoise would be great, but that is a pipe dream. Lol

As odd as it may sound, if anyone should want to trade Copper Cabinets for Gold, or know anyone who would, please keep me in mind. Thanks.

Don’t let the carbon brush fly off into space since they are impossible to find when that happens.

Where is that carbon brush?
I fear I already lost it. When I took off the 8 bolts that hold the drum surround, one bolt has a white plastic piece with a spring inside.[this post was last edited: 8/19/2020-14:34]

Unfortunately

That is where the little carbon brush resides, so if you don't see it around somewhere you'll need to replace it. I have some spares that I'm not willing to part with, but I'll see if I can find one and get a photo of it for you. You should be able to fabricate one from a larger bit of carbon to replace the missing one. Be sure to check your dryer's base. The carbon brush may have slid off and landed in among the lint.[this post was last edited: 8/19/2020-11:28]

The carbon should be in front of the spring. If you lost it you can go to a motor repair place a get a carbon brush close to the size you need and sand it down to fit. I had to do this with mine because the brush just fell apart with age.

I think I probably vacuumed it up!
Now I have to dig thru the vacuum.
Part # 311534 or 3-11534 felt seal...how hard is it to make one of these or repurpose a different part number?

Thx Dan, ordered a new felt seal and can pick it up locally when it gets in, perfect.
I also need the other (outer) seal on the drum, does any know the #?...I have a couple #’s and not sure which is the correct one.
Also That carbon is still on the loose, what is it’s part number?

I want this “runnin’ fine all the time” ASAP, and off to a happy new home (perhaps someone reading this now) soon thereafter.

Your dryer is electric and doesn't use the outer drum seal, so if you've found the inner seal you're good to go. That outer drum seal was used on the gas dryers only. It's very odd that yours would've had the remains of one as it would absolutely interfere with the intended airflow of the electric versions.

This is a photo I took of when I installed the outer felt seal on my 1973 Maytag DG306. You’ll notice there isn’t a heating element since it’s a gas HOH and the burner is right below the outer felt seal and the air mixer assembly is located on the lower right hand corner

This Copper 806 set, plus a stacked Speed Queen combo set (digital controls electric dryer), and a Maytag stacked Neptune combo (dial controls gas dryer) all for $1,000...any takers?
