Question

Did the housewife really sit on a stool next to the machine and read a magazine while it was running?

They were noisy!

I grew up with an early 70's Maytag dishwasher in the house. I think reading during the cycle would be your only option since you couldn't hear a TV, radio or have a conversation in a normal tone of voice with it running!

Very nice.  They eventually modified the pots & pans cycle  on the push-button model such that the brochure I got in  1984, said the main wash phase was extended.  I think by that time they'd also rearranged the buttons such that there was heated dry on or off and it wasn't tied to one certain cycle.

David, a thousand thanks!

That first dishwasher catalog is one of the first I ever got back in 1970! Forgot totally about it! And the model is the same woman they used for the Washer and Dryer catalog. And I'm here to attest that that Maytag Top Loading portable is one of the best freakin' dishwashers I've ever used.

Very nice!

<span style="font-family: georgia,palatino;">Great Scans! </span>
<span style="font-family: georgia, palatino;">Interesting on the first set of scans the pots & pans cycle is shorter than the regular cycle. I wonder if this was a misprint?</span>
<span style="font-family: georgia,palatino;">There are beautiful dishwashers! </span>
<span style="font-family: georgia,palatino;">Thanks for sharing! </span>

Oh!

A white WC400 was my first dishwasher. So far, my best dishwasher.
I Bobloaded it on a regular basis, and unless the item was BURNED on, instead of just baked on, everything cleaned the first time.

Thank you for scanning.

Pots & Pans time misprint

Brent, no it wasn't.  The description mentioned the cycle was also plastics.  The heating element was not energized at all during the cycle and at the end of hte final rinse, the cycle terminated without drying heat.  As I mentioned above, I knew at some point Maytag rearranged buttons/names on the TOL and the Pots & Pans Cycle ended up with an extended main wash and added heat and heated dry.  They just switched the no-heat option cycle to china & plastics.

Montgomery Wards Dishwasher made by Maytag

These machines look very much like the pushbutton dishwasher we had in the early '70's. Did Maytag make them or was it someone else?

The MW we had look identical to these Maytags - and yes, they were loud.
