I have a maytag dryer de-712 that wont stop when the timed dry is over. I tried the automatic mode and it'll run for hours if you let it. I have a spare timer for it that I put in, it made no difference. I have the electronic board and all the switches I took off a really beat up dryer I bought for parts. I've changed so far the timer and the electronic board to no effect. If I hear the bell ring it'll stop but most of the time I know 30 minutes has passed so ill go stop it myself. it seems mega random as to when it will work right. Any thoughts? When its acting up, turning the needle to zero does not stop it.

Update! I flipped the control panel down and set the timer for 5 mins. when the needle gets about 3/8" from the zero line, the clock motor stops. shouldn't it advance to zero on it's own? I switched the control board for another one, does the same thing but I assume that either one is working. I guess the control board could be part of this?

The 712

The 712 is unusual in that the Electronic Control is still in the circuit for timed drying. So basically the timer motor stopping is exactly what it is supposed to to. The Electronic sensor takes over until the load is dry and then the timer motor advances.

However the dryer should not be running for hours.
Not one of Maytag's smartest ideas.

Try cleaning your sensor bars or just unplug the connector to them and see if dryer will now shut off. The dryness control board is used to shut the dryer off in both timed and auto dry. If the bars are shorting out, the control board can't function properly and the dryer will not shut off. Don't forget that the dryer will keep tumbling for a few minutes even after heat shuts off and end of cycle bell sounds, due to the cool down thermostat.
